Publisher's summary

Famous, all-encompassing, passionate, but ultimately doomed love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and the people around them. Today considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights was met with mixed reviews when it first appeared, mainly because of the narrative's stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty. Wuthering Heights has also given rise to many adaptations and inspired works, including films, radio, television dramatisations, a musical by Bernard J. Taylor, a ballet, three operas (respectively by Bernard Herrmann, Carlisle Floyd, and Frédéric Chaslin), a role-playing game, and the 1979 chart topping song by Kate Bush.

not bad at all

I had to give this book a chance because I had so many friends tell me they loved it. I did enjoy it and the narrator was great. it's just kind of a sad book though. but I did enjoy it

A classic of gothic literature.

In the begining I was thought it was a little boring. But it gets better after the first haft. This is a good old gothic story.

Slow moving, and Dated

The authors use of language is superb. The character of Heathcliff is unforgettable. Still, I do not put this book in the “couldn’t put it down“ category. I think you it’s mainly due to the fact that I could not relate to the story.

Five stars for the wonderful Emma Messenger

I have waited to read this book for years now, but never found the time or patience to do so, as my native language is German, and even though I do read in English every once in a while, it is just more demanding and time consuming for me. I therefore often go with a German translation. This classic though needs to be read in the original, I thought.
To now have a talent like Emma Messenger's read it to me is simply wonderful. Her voice is most pleasant and has the range and variety of an entire orchestra, she's extremely good with rhythm, her emotional skills and delivery are excellent, plus she never lacks to let humor show through where it is appropriate. I highly recommend having Emma Messenger read to you and I'm excited to hear more of her. I can very well picture her doing something like Truman Capote's "The Grass Harp". I doubt there's much she couldn't do.

Very well narrated

This narrator really adds to the audio book experience through the emotion she brings to the story. Recommended!

My first 5 star rating for a book with only

loathsome characters. I have never before rated a book 5 stars if I didn't love at least one character. I loathed all of the leading characters. I found little to be redeeming in any of them. Despite this, Emily Bronte made me have sympathy for all of them and hope for each of them to have a more desirable outcome. Her writing style was exquisite. And I loved the descriptions of the moors, the mansions, the people. I loved the story within a story style of telling the tales involved. I loved that when Heathcliff was missing the question of his whereabouts and doings remained untold. I loved that Nellie told the story from her viewpoint which meant there were emotions, thoughts and actions that we couldn't understand.

The book is an intricate exposure of what happens to people when they live for revenge. Emily took Heathcliff down a very twisted path and allowed him to be very unlikable.
She allowed him to seethe in his own jealousy, anger and grief. She allowed him to be repulsive. And I am so glad that she did!

Some of the other reviewers disliked Emma Messenger's narration. I didn't have a problem with it. This is my first reading of the book, and know very little about the appropriate accents, so I believe that I do not have the knowledge some others may have. But I enjoyed her choices for the voices of the main characters and especially liked the sinister quality she gave to Heathcliff.

Beautiful story

Writing does not disappoint and melancholy to the bitter end. Performance was just okay I found the reader's voice to have too many variations in tone and volume found myself constantly turning the volume up or down or repeating sections because I couldn't understand the accents. Overall still a very good download.

For the love education

I'm not fond of this story. I recognize all the aspects and elements that make it a classic, but there's not much to it. I read it because the plot cannot be avoided if you call yourself an English teacher. Ultimately, it's a precautionary tale: don't bring home abandoned children if you can't protect them, and don't spoil the children you bring into this world.
