First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

Doyle ended up writing four novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes and his companion, Dr. Watson. All but four are told in the first person by Watson, two by Holmes, and two are written in the third person. Together, this series of beautifully written Victorian literature has sold more copies than any other books in the English language, with the exceptions of the Bible and Shakespeare.

Volume 1 in this series consists of two novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four, followed by a collection of short stories entitled The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Very well produced and entertaining stories

What made the experience of listening to The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1 the most enjoyable?

I like a good mystery and Sherloch Holmes' logic is engrossing. It made very good listening.

What did you like best about this story?

The facts and solutions for each of the stories were very well presented and were thus most interesting

Which scene was your favorite?

Enjoyed the period in which each of adventures took place.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No as I liked to ponder each of the stories before continuing to the next.

The reading was entertaining and exciting it kept me wanting to keep listening to hear what was next. I would recommend this too

A perfectly-voiced narrator with excellent range.

The narrator has an absurdly well-suited and very distinctive voice for each and every character.

Wonderful stories, wonderfully read!

I didn't expect to enjoy these stories, despite the high ratings. When I first loaded my mp3 player, I ignored this book for several days, preferring to listen yet again to two other books I've listened to many, many times (Catching Fire and Mockingjay, vols 2 & 3 of the Hunger Games trilogy).

When I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about, I was very pleasantly surprised! The stories are interest grabbing and the reader is most excellent. Now I must get the rest in this series--and keep my eyes and ears open for the reader.

Which character – as performed by Charlton Griffin – was your favorite?

Charlton Griffin did such a great job with all the characters, I loved his voice! It was like listening to your grandfather, if he had an English accent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I found myself sitting in the bathtub until it was cold because I didn't want to stop listening, and then I'd sneak my headphones into bed so I didn't disturb my husband while I finished a story. When listening to it in my car, I'd circle the block a few times or sit in the driveway to listen a bit longer. Heck, I even listened to it while grocery shopping. I love this book.

No, not because its not engaging but because there are mulitple stories and there are 3 parts to the book, each ~6hrs

Well narrated and enjoyable! Charlton Griffin does a good job of capturing Holmes attitude and manors. The stories are classic and well known.
