Publisher's summary

When Mrs. Dashwood is forced by an avaricious daughter-in-law to leave the family home in Sussex, she takes her three daughters to live in a modest cottage in Devon. For Elinor, the eldest daughter, the move means a painful separation from the man she loves, but her sister Marianne finds in Devon the romance and excitement which she longs for. The contrasting fortunes and temperaments of the two girls as they struggle to cope in their different ways with the cruel events which fate has in store for them are portrayed by Jane Austen with her usual irony, humour, and profound sensibility.

A lesser work to Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors. Her stories are intricate and her characters are deliciously drawn. However, if you are not a scholar of the era, nor a British citizen, a lot of the intricacies will either be lost to you or will horribly confuse you.
Regardless, the essential story has classic elements and the title completely encapsulates it.
This Audible production completely brings the characters to life.

I love the vocabulary.

I just love this type of book with the quaint vocabulary and manner of speaking. The story line was different than the film, but I expect that with most novels. Loved listening to the book a lot!

Great sister story!

Sense and Sensibility may now be near the top of my list of favorite Jane Austen books! Elinor and Marianne were very different, but I liked them and their sisterly relationship a lot. The relationship dramas (emphasis on drama :p), as usual with Austen, were at turns compelling, infuriating (Can I slap Willoughby now? Poor Marianne…), and ultimately satisfying. I very much enjoyed the twists and turns and wondering how things would turn out. I also enjoyed Juliet Stevenson's narration as usual.

Content Advisory: No violence. I don’t remember any swearing, but the Lord’s name was taken in vain a number of times. There was lots of gossiping (though that’s pretty much true of every Austen book :p), some talk/rumors of illegitimate children (not explicit talk by any means), some manipulative and cheating characters, so on and so forth. Basically, typical Jane Austen fare.
