The narration on this was fantastic. Listening to Fagan makes your skin crawl - it's that good. I had to get the unabridged version. I can't imagine Dickens with the wonderful commentary cut out. I highly recommend this book and am going to check out what other's have the same narrator.
What an amazing narrator, what an actor, what a delightful pleasure it was to listen to these many voices, to these many characters performed by one mighty talented man.
I had so much fun listening to it, listening to him that I must say BRAVO !!!
rich tapestry of interwoven plotlines
memorable characters (even if they are a bit stereotypical)
excellent narration; makes listening an engaging experience.
I have never read or seen the entire story, so this was a delight. Martin Jarvis brought the characters to life and was consistent throughout the whole story. I wouldn't even think of giving this anything less than 4 stars.
Oliver Twist is a well told story, and in this case it was narrated fantastically. I don't usually like when the narrator tries to do "voices", but in this case he was great.
It was very hard for me to rate this book. The story was very interesting and well written. However, every-time the narrator called Fagen "The Jew", it twisted my stomach. There is an underlying tone in this book from the beginning to the very end, that says, Jews equal the devil and Christians are the good people. It was quite disturbing.
If it weren't for that I would have given this book 5 stars. Because of that I want to give this book 1 star.
"A classic story read to perfection"
Martin Jarvis, in my very humble opinion, makes the audio books that he reads come alive brilliantly with each characters voice that he creates. As someone else said in another Dickens review, ‘It’s as if there where 20 actors on stage and they were all him’. So ‘Oliver Twist’ was no disappointment to me and I can thoroughly recommend this classic story read by a man who is master of his craft.
Just to point out that the Audible title ‘Oliver Twist Part 1’ is a little confusing. Part 2 is included in the download. You will have the complete book.
"Martin Jarvis is always good"
Martin Jarvis brought the book to life. I could listen to him all day! The characterisation is excellent.
"W Martin Jarvis"
I have not read the book
Other Dickens' s novels
Where the beadle was present
Martin Jarvis is great!Per uno straniero è utile poter ascoltare i libri inglesi classici letti così chiaramente, sembra che ci siano più attori a leggere e non solo uno. Veramente strepitoso
"So much more than the films"
I like to listen to Dickens stories when driving, especially when driving long distances. Dicken's use of language is always a delight and the names of his characters bring a smile to my face. I also tend to choose those books that have Martin Jarvis as the narrator because he brings the characters to life just by the different voices and accents. Oliver Twist is a much longer book than I thought from watching the television adaptations and the films. More happens after the failed burglary than I realised.
It's been a long time since I read this myself, but I can say I really enjoyed listening to it, at one pointy nephew and niece were both captivated by the story, at 6 & 7 years, I believe this is very telling. So their mum will also be investing in audio books...
First time for me! Totally fantastic really enjoyed the whole experience. Mr Jarvis enthralled me.
"Dickens + Jarvis = Brilliant"
Martin Jarvis makes this well-known tale come to life by the vividness of his characterisation and breadth of expression. He is unmatched as a narrator of Dickens' prose, which is, as always, a treasure trove of delight.
It ranks as one of many at the top and will never move from that position.
Like other Dickens stories, he chooses his characters so well. It is a story of how hope can shine through the darkest times.
There are so many scenes that it's impossible to pick one in particular.
A school teacher read this book to us and I was aged eleven, nearly twelve at the time. I remember we couldn't wait for the next episode. The copy he was reading was a more accessible one for our age group, but it has stayed with me ever since and the book remains a firm favourite.
Martin Jarvis is an excellent reader and I like his reading of Mr Brownlow. He is particularly good during the interview Brownlow had with Monks and you can tell Brownlow really means business. He has an excellent voice for Oliver at the times he is ill and weak.
If you want to read Dickens and aren't sure where to start, I would suggest you choose this book, or Great Expectations.
Martin Jarvis is the preeminent teller of Dickens. A magnificent tale , superbly told.
Audible please keep these classics coming, thanks.
