Story
Samuel Pickwick, founder and chairman of the Pickwick Club, engages three fellow members to accompany him on a journey. By coach they’ll travel to the outreaches of London to explore, observe, and report back on the quaint wonders of the English countryside. What transpires is a picaresque romp of misadventures, hair-raising challenges, and romantic follies entangling the fates of a riot of colorful characters - a passel of villains, spinsters, poets, and sportsmen - and the unworldly Pickwick himself, who has much to learn about life outside his gentleman’s club.

Story
Hard Times is Dickens's most political novel. Set in the industrial north of England, in Coketown, he examines the lives of working people, who are taught by the capitalists Gradgrind and Bounderby to think only of the facts of life and not to indulge in imagination. Gradgrind’s own children have been so educated and as a result are dysfunctional and disconnected from their feelings. Only the travelling circus company of Sleary seems to offer any hope of humanity in Coketown.

One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Publisher's summary
Exclusively from Audible
One of Dickens' early works, Nicholas Nickleby combines comedy and tragedy in a tale of triumph over adversity that is interspersed with Dickens' moving condemnation of society's mistreatment of children and the cruelty of the educational system. Young Nickleby struggles to seek his fortune in Victorian England, yet succeeds despite social injustice, in a story that mirrors Dickens' own rise from poverty to great success.
One of eight children, Dickens came from a very poor family, with his father eventually being sent to debtor's prison. At the age of 12, Dickens was forced to start work in a blacking factory in order to help clear the family debt.
Dickens depicts a funny version of his own mother in the character of Mrs. Nickleby, his feelings towards her dark and complex. He never forgave her for trying to keep him working against her husband's wishes.
Hailed as a comic triumph with a cast of incredible characters, it firmly established Dickens as a 'literary gentleman'.
Full of typically Dickensian elements, the book is well suited to dramatic adaptation.
It is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic masterpieces of 19th century literature and continues to entertain its fans to this day.

Set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this classic gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. The novel revolves around the exploits of the impoverished but beautiful and devious Becky Sharp who craves wealth and a position in society. Calculating and determined to succeed, she charms, deceives and manipulates everyone she meets. A novel of early 19th-century English society, it takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan's 17th-century allegory.

Story
A masterful blend of Gothic drama and romance, Wilkie Collins' mystery novel is an exploration of illegitimacy and inheritance. Set in Cornwall, the plot foreshadows The Woman in White with its themes of doubtful identity and deception and involves a broad array of characters. The "secret" of the book's title is the true parentage of the book's heroine, Rosamond Treverton, which has been written down and kept in an unused room at Porthgenna Tower. This is where, 20 years later, much of the novel's action is set.

Story
Immediately following the success of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott sat down to write An-Old Fashioned Girl, expanding on the subject of rich versus poor that she explored in her first novel. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Fanny and her friends dress and behave as their elders do, flirting with boys and gossiping.

Story
Lady Ludlow's appalling snobbery, prejudice and bred-in-the-bone conviction as to the superiority of the English aristocracy and their feudal way of life are deliciously tested, and found wanting, in this gently radical tale of the collapse of a social system. Elizabeth Gaskell's My Lady Ludlow is a brilliant picture of the shift in power in a rural northern village, from the velvety feudal Ludlows to the glitter of the new money rattling through the system courtesy of the brazen baker from Birmingham.

In this Audible Exclusive performance by Matt Lucas of Great Expectations, Charles Dickens demonstrates that conscience, loyalty and empathy are virtues far more valuable than intellect, wealth and social standing. First published in Dickens’ own periodical, All the Year Round, the novel was divided into nine monthly instalments, from December 1860 to August 1861. Unsurprisingly, it was an instant success and managed to sell over 100,000 copies per week. Though written at a challenging time in Dickens’ life, when the impending breakdown of his marriage loomed over him, Great Expectations proves to be one of his most optimistic, comical and romantic novels.

An absolute delight. A big, long, sometimes meandering book by Charles Dickens, it may be better listened to than read - provided the narrator is of this calibre! I was sad when it ended, but the day will come when I listen to it again. It gave me many, many...many! hours of pleasure and appreciation.

The amazing Alex Jennings
Dickens novels are famous for their sprawling characters, and I am amazed at Alex Jennings’s masterful oratory and memorable performances of so many characters. I mean, you really need to have an experienced actor when recording Dickens—and this is right up there as one of the best dickens recordings I’ve ever heard.

Beautiful filler.
What did you like best about Nicholas Nickleby? What did you like least?
Best liked: The parts of the story that moved the plot forward, especially the conflict sections. Dickens' antagonists are the best. Also, his wonderful descriptions of human foibles and vanities are poignant and hilarious.
The narrator is very good. He keeps the numerous characters identifiable and memorable.
Least liked: Truly half of the novel is filler that is almost completely disconnected from the plot. These sections are clearly intended to make the novel come out to a specific length, and most likely were necessary to satisfy serialization agreements. During these entire chapters, the story comes to a complete stop.
Despite nuggets of brilliant satire and beautiful characterization, these sections are essentially character studies a novelist might write to round out the characters in his/her mind. But they would not normally be included in the novel.
Has Nicholas Nickleby turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. Even Dickens' weak novels are gems.
Which character – as performed by Alex Jennings – was your favorite?
Dickens' villains are almost always the most interesting. If I had to pick one here, I'd choose Mr. Squeers, who is consistently and enthusiastically despicable, while at the same time cunning, self-aware and three dimensional.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Probably, knowing that the extra fluff would be eliminated for film.

Although not one of Dickens' great texts, Jennings' gives a flat, boring narration of the novel. What I found most troubling is his inability to present the female parts in an enjoyable reading; they were quite annoying actually. I much prefer Robert Whitfield's narration. Overall, a poor narration. It sounded as if he were forced to read this novel and didn't enjoy it himself.
