Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Jenny is the story of Jenny Winge, a talented Norwegian painter who lives a free and independent life in Rome. Betraying her own ideals, she has an affair, resulting in a child out of wedlock, and decides to raise the child on her own. Undset gives a gripping portrayal of a woman struggling towards fulfillment and independence, who at the same time wrestles with mental problems. It is written with unflinching honesty, which makes her story as compelling today as it was nearly a century ago.

Story
Raised in post-Revolution Granville, Massachusetts, James Gould could only imagine the beauty and warmth of the lands to the south. It was there that he longed to build bridges and lighthouses from his very own designs and plans. His gripping story unfolds as Gould follows his dream to the raw settlement of Bangor on the Penobscot River, St. Simons Island off the coast of Georgia, lawless Spanish East Florida, and back - at last and finally - to St. Simons.

Story
Perfect for fans of The Keeper of Lost Things and The Villa in Italy. Blue lives a charmed life. From her family's townhouse in Richmond, she lives a life of luxury and couldn't want for anything - well, on the surface at least. Then, on the night of her 21st birthday, her father makes a startling toast: he will give his daughter's hand to whichever man can capture her heart best in the form of a love letter. But Blue has other ideas, and, unwilling to play at her father's bewildering games, she sets out on her own path to find her own destiny....

Story
Set in the industrialising England of the Napoleonic wars, a period of bad harvests, Luddite riots, and economic unrest, Shirley is the story of two contrasting heroines and the men they love. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory, whose life represents the plight of single women in the 19th century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention.

Story
Lark Rise is Flora Thompson's childhood memories of a north Oxfordshire village, the people who lived and worked in it, and a way of life that has totally disappeared. The story is built around Laura and her brother Edmund, through whose eyes are seen 'old Sally', whose grandfather built the house she lived in before the enclosure of the heathland, children's games, the interaction of village and gentry, and the way in which the seasons governed life.

Delightful change of pace
The narrator of this beautiful story is perfect. This is the type of story that will charm and delight you. You will come away with your senses aware of the passing seasons, the desire to set high ambitions and a new way of seeing the romance of the everyday. It's a lovely listen.

Just Like the Characters we Know and Love
This performance of Anne of Green Gables was equal to the story! I didn't go back and look to see when it was produced, (i.e. before or after the Megan Follows movies) but the reader seemed to reflect the voices and personalities of the actors in the movies. To me, that was a good thing, because I love the movie versions of Anne and did not have to adjust my thinking to get used to a new set of voices. Matthew and Marilla were especially well-read, but all of them were, really.
The story of Anne itself is a touching tale that makes me cry at least once every time I read / listen / watch it. Even the men of my household love this book!

Best Narration!
There are lots of audio versions of this book, but this one has the best narration of the them all! The characters really come to life with the way Shelly Frasier has performed them. Don’t pass this one up.

Smile from Ear to Ear
I remember reading this book when I was a child and smiling from ear to ear as I read. Anne does not disappoint I laughed and smiled with Anne through her ups and downs as I recently listened as an adult. This book is a must listen.

simply delightful
I completely fell in love with Anne from.Green Gables. Listening to this classic as an adult is an entirely different experience than reading as a girl of about ten. My appreciation for the beautifully written story grew with each chapter, I hardly wanted it all to end. The detailed descriptions of Anne's witness to the world gave me new daily appreciation for the splendor we so often take for granted. Absolutely one of the most charming novels ever written and narration brings it all to life.
