Publisher's summary

The definitive guide to working with - and surviving - bullies, creeps, jerks, tyrants, tormentors, despots, backstabbers, egomaniacs, and all the other assholes who do their best to destroy you at work.

"What an asshole!" How many times have you said that about someone at work? You're not alone! In this groundbreaking book, Stanford University professor Robert I. Sutton builds on his acclaimed Harvard Business Review article to show you the best ways to deal with assholes...and why they can be so destructive to your company.

Practical, compassionate, and in places downright funny, this guide offers:

  • Strategies on how to pinpoint and eliminate negative influences for good Illuminating case histories from major organizations
  • A self-diagnostic test and a program to identify and keep your own "inner jerk" from coming out

The No Asshole Rule is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Business Week best seller.

Average

I work in an organization with many assholes. What I heard in this book is dealing with an abusive relationship between employees and bosses. I think this can be combated with setting boundaries. I have set boundaries by managing up and down by communicating what I will and will not accept from assholes. I would have liked to hear more about how to set those boundaries vs listening to the realities of what already is. I would not recommend this book to strong independent people who know how to handle and set up parameters with assholes.

Amusing

Many good points and fun to read. I caught myself smiling a lot through it - most likely because I could relate to many of the situations.

GOOD READ. WISH IT WAS LONGER

I am an active duty Marine and I believe that this book should be on the Commandant's reading list. if walls could talk, I can't even fathom how much talent and combat experience has been lost just because one officer, SgtMaj, 1stSgt, GySgt, SSgt or NCO was simply a dick

Powerful and Amusing

What's not to love about Bob Sutton?

Great book, well written. Bob works the mic well and keeps you engaged throughout. Being an HR professional I love the topic. The title sets the stage for the seriousness of the subject.

Bob speaks from example and looks in the mirror throughout versus pointing the finger at others.

I will end up buying a hard copy to keep on my credenza at work just for the visual aid and to see others reactions it was that good. Sound be a great conversation starter.

He Nailed It!

Sutton lays it on the line, calling out all of the narcissists, jerks, a**holes and microaggressors sabotaging the best laid strategic plans of many organizations. A must read for anyone interested in organizational culture, employee morale and talent management. -- Margaret E.
