Most of the concepts related are generic networking tips but the strength is McKay's translation of the concepts into practical advice. His use of his own business examples gives the material a greater importance. Listening to the book is like getting advice from a successful uncle. I started networking before I even finished the book and the payoffs were immediate.
I have listen to other networking books, but this is the best one yet. Harvey Mackay does an excellent job of describing basic techniques for networking. His examples hit home with me when I think back to situations and how I could have handled it differently.
If there is only one book on networking that you buy, I would suggest "Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty"
I like Harvey's reading style, and I enjoyed his earlier "Sharks" book very much, but I found this book lacked practical substance. It's long on homilies about the benefits of having a network, and the pitfalls of not having one, but short on practical advice.
I give it a C-
Diligence may be number one but Networking is critical to success. Mackay doesn't offer gimmicks - he offers solid, practical, and sincere advice. He provides a number of personal illustrations that drive home his recommendations. Highly recommended - easy to listen to - absolutely worth the money.
This book is both informative and entertaining. Although I believed that networking was important before listening to this book I soon realised that my own network isn't as big as it should be. I don't have that many people that I could turn to for the illustrious 2am phone call.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. Networking can help anyone throughout their life.
I really enjoyed Harvey's book and have made a note to give it a listen about every 12 months. His tips and point of view on how to cultivate a cirlce of friends and associates is priceless. Harvey's reading is also very warm, much better than the average narrator.
Harvey presents a clear and concise path on how to network and the importance of cultivating your networking skills. Harvey really "digs into" the subject matter in an entertaining and easy to listen to fashion. Hopefully ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN etal don't try their hand at networking the Harvey Mackay way.

I did not finish the book. There is something terribly wrong with this one... it assumes a narcissistic manipulative way of dealing with people... listening to it makes me feel sick... one thing is dealing with people in a way that makes them feel good about them selves for altruistic reasons to make your company enjoyable for them and to encourage the best in them (for their benefit not yours), the other is to do that in order to gain benefits from them like a f***by parasite... in this book anything goes... condoning someone's immorral and hurtful behaviour as long as you get a benefit out of it is justified according to this author... disgusting... maybe I just misunderstood the whole thing, but this is the way I feel about this book... hope this review may be of benefit to whomever it may concern.
