Publisher's summary

Will Meadows is a seemingly average 15-year-old Westie who lives and works in Zone F, the run-down outermost ring of the Corporation. In the future state of the Corp, a person’s value comes down to productivity: The right actions win units; the wrong ones lose them. If Will is unlucky and goes into unit debt, there’s only one place to go: the Rator. But for Zone F Breeders, things are much worse - they’re born into debt and can only accrue units through reproduction.

Every day in Zone F is a struggle, especially for Will who is fighting against time for access to an illegal medical drug, Crystal 8. Under the cover of night, Will travels to the Gray Zone, where life is less regulated and drugs - and people - are exchanged for gold. There, Will meets Rob, a corrupt member of the Corporation running a Breeder smuggling operation. Will also meets Alex, another teen whom he quickly recognizes as a Breeder in disguise.

Suddenly, Will has an illicit job and money, access to Crystal, and a real friend. As the pair grows closer, Alex shares her secret: She is part of the Response, an uprising to overthrow the Corporation. Caught up in the new friendship, Will and Alex become careless as the two covertly travel into Zone B for a day of adventure. Nothing goes as planned, and Will’s greatest fear is realized. Will his true identity be revealed?

I wish this was a series

This was such a good book with such a a good narrator. I was shocked many times over, and ultimately, hanging onto every word. If I could wipe my memory and listen to this book again I would.

Could have been so much more.

Will seemed to be the master of stupid choices, though was redeemed towards the end when thinking things through emerged. The side characters lacked depth which would have made a better story.

This was interesting but the narrator was very bad

The overall concept was good, the story built up and had a lot of potential, but the ending was not satisfying at all. The narrator was so monotone which did add a bit to the ambiance of the story but after a while it was like all the words ran together.

Great dystopian book

Will Meadows is a breeder runner. Breeder runners illegally cross the border to get young girls to take them back to the incubator and they are held there against their will to be surrogates. They stay there until they are no longer useful and then they can either be bought by someone or they get sent to the raidar which is a furnace.
Alex is a runaway breeder and Will and her become friends. She doesn’t know that Will is a breeder runner, so that makes things interesting. Eventually they get caught and that’s when it starts getting really good.

I really hope there will be a second book! I was immediately sucked into the story and I can’t wait to find out what happens!

Rough start but no spoilers in my review

Breeder is a rough start to get into. It took several chapters to fully understand the primary characters point of view. A suggestion for the author - a prelude that sets the stage more concisely and helps the reader embrace the story line you artfully develop through terminology and the dystopian world.

It’s a good story, just push through the first few chapters in order to understand the main character.

There are so many problems with the story

if they take all the girls, how do they have children. You need woman to have the girls for them to take. since no poor can't affored woman them, then they can't have children.

Lacking Drive

The main character has no motivation throughout nearly the entire book. They have no moral code, no real desires, and their struggles have no impact on them. The concept for this is interesting, but with a main character that lacks any sort of personality it becomes 2d.
