Publisher's summary

Poppy’s dream of being an author is on life support, and the plug’s about to be pulled. She can barely make her rent, and she’s avoiding her mom’s calls about going to law school. She hasn’t even hit rock bottom yet, this is just a ledge on the way down….

When Poppy Perkins decides to talk back to a customer who thinks it’s okay to scream at her over donuts, Poppy knows she’s going to get fired. But what she doesn’t expect is for the customer to be a local celebrity, and for a video of their interaction to go viral—or for the customer to drop dead five minutes later, poisoned by the donut Poppy had just served him.

Okay, now she’s hit rock bottom.

With Poppy the prime suspect, she has to find the real killer before she’s locked up for a crime she didn’t commit. But what originally looks to be a run-of-the-mill murder quickly finds Poppy mired in a case that’s thicker than San Francisco fog. And can Poppy trust the journalist with adorable dimples who insists he’s only after the truth?

Will Poppy get to the bottom of this case and find the killer, or is she about to get Boston creamed?

Very good book.

This was a very good book.
The narrator was excellent. I love mysteries and this was a good one.

Cute but disappointing

The characters were all nice and the voice actor did well, but the “reveal” at the end of the story was disappointing. Not only was there not enough “evidence” or hints for the audience to guess the mystery, there wasn’t even enough there for the PI in the story to have convincingly figured out who the murderer was (short of an unmentioned psychic ability). Nor was the motive for the murder convincing. Very thin plot made for an unrewarding conclusion.

Outstanding narration, ordinary almost-cozy

Just your standard plucky gal caught in a TV level mystery. Sadly, there were a handful of unnecessary curse words. In the first five minutes, there’s a sh!t and b***h, and further on there’s an A hole. Otherwise, it’s full cozy and light-hearted (but not laugh out loud) fun. It was worth the price on sale,
but I doubt I’ll continue with the series.

Fun murder mystery with Bay City Tech backdrop

You’ll enjoy this murder mystery involving a hot tech executive’s murder and the barista/aspiring author who is blamed for it. Savvy private investigator unravels the case with barista at her side. Recommended!

Fun but light

Not as funny as I expected, but still entertaining. The mystery wasn’t much and ending too pat.

Comedy

Is a very cute comedy not true to life. It was a cute put together very well story not for people. To think that this would happen in real life.
Unrealistic. I enjoyed every minute of this book. 1st time for this author not the last I love this comedy.

Good until it wasn’t

This book was cute and light through the first 20 chapters. The mystery unfolded with clues being given. But it was as though the writer just wanted the reader not to be able to solve it or to be surprised so just throws out a random ending. Extremely unsatisfying. Plus the last three chapters were filled with sappy dialogue. Ugh. Regret reading

Funny story

Enjoyed listening to this book, was amusing and had an unexpected ending. Cute. Was not meant to be a serious murder book.

Needed more depth, mildly entertaining

This was an easy listen that didn't require any thinking. a good thing too, as the motive unveiled at the end was just lame. The narrator did a good job with the characters, but the conversations and dialogue had no zing. It wasn't a bad book, unfortunately it wasn't a great one either. I don't think I'll go back for the next in the series unless on sale.

I liked the mystery…

the murder, the investigation, the solution. But narration…the voice often faded at the end of sentences. Needed an(?other) editor to catch the wrong words (self deprecating, not self depreciating) and grammar (“cops and me would be here”). Didn’t mind the time, glad it was free.
