Like Bridgerton, but with Vampires

Angelica Winthrop wants nothing more than to ruin her reputation to avoid marriage and be a gothic authoress like her idol, Mary Shelley. Unfortunately, all her schemes keep backfiring and the wedding noose is tightening. To find inspiration for her next story, she breaks into the reputably haunted home of Ian Ashton, Duke of Burnrath. But when she tumbles down the stairs, Angelica finds something far more dangerous than ghosts.

Ian is the Lord vampire of London and is currently at his wit’s end. Thanks to a vampire craze spawned by the publication of John Polidori’s The Vampyre, tongues are wagging and wagers are being made about his nocturnal proclivities. The solution to his problem tumbles into his lap in the form of the vivacious heiress.

The duke destroys Angelica’s plans by publicly proposing marriage to save his reputation. Sparks fly as the authoress attempts every impropriety to dissuade the vampire and he retaliates with his skills of seduction.

After a quirky courtship and a tender wedding night, their rocky marriage of convenience is played out before the scandalized eyes of the ton. If that weren’t enough, a vampire hunter and John Polidori himself are also watching…and plotting.

Don't be fooled.

The performance is spectacular. With Claire Glover doing a marvelous job at different voices and even accents. The pacing was a little too fast at times, and where there should have been a pause for a change of scene or transition to another character there was literally none. As though it was a run-on sentence. So for that, I take one performance point off.

I love Brooklyn Ann's books and I was ecstatic to see that she was finally getting them in Audio. Although this particular title is not my most favorite of this series, it is still a fantastic read/listen. With the characters being fleshed out with their eccentricities causing them issues that would have been very real had they happened in real life.

Tasty twist on regency romances!

I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to audible releases of the rest of the series. Since the story takes place for the most part in London, the British narrator was appropriately chosen and did a great job with all the voices, making them easily distinguishable between characters, even the male voices, which are sometimes difficult for female narrators to make believable.
The story is lively and keeps you listening, and from what little I know about this era in history, is well researched making the scenes feel authentic. Plot twists which set the book apart from your typical daytime romance add to the fun! The characters are easy to engage with and make you care for them. I highly recommend any of Brooklyn Ann's books, though this is her first available as an audiobook.
