The Tao of Martha: My Year of LIVING; Or, Why I'm Never Getting All That Glitter Off of the Dog

One would think that with Jen Lancaster’s impressive list of bestselling self-improvement memoirs that she would have it all together by now. One would be wrong. Jen’s still a little rough around the edges. Suffice it to say, she’s no Martha Stewart. And that is exactly why Jen is going to Martha up and live her life according to the advice of America’s overachieving older sister - the woman who turns lemons into lavender-infused lemonade.

Publisher's Summary

One would think that with Jen Lancaster’s impressive list of best-selling self-improvement memoirs - Bitter Is the New Black; Bright Lights, Big Ass; Such a Pretty Fat; Pretty in Plaid; My Fair Lazy; and Jeneration X - that she would have it all together by now.

By immersing herself in Martha’s media empire, Jen will embark on a yearlong quest to take herself, her house, her husband (and maybe even her pets) to the next level - from closet organization to craft making, from party planning to kitchen prep.

Maybe Jen can go four days without giving herself food poisoning if she follows Martha’s dictates on proper storage.... Maybe she can grow closer to her girlfriends by taking up their boring-ass hobbies like knitting and sewing.... Maybe she can finally rid her workout clothes of meatball stains by using Martha’s laundry tips.... Maybe she can create a more meaningful anniversary celebration than just getting drunk in the pool with her husband.... again. And maybe, just maybe, she’ll discover that the key to happiness does, in fact, lie in Martha’s perfectly arranged cupboards and artfully displayed charcuterie platters.

Or maybe not.

    "Disappointing"

I'm so disappointed, maybe because I've always enjoyed this author's books, but not this one. Her voice is pretty annoying to listen to for more than just a few minutes at a time. I regret wasting a credit on this one.

    "dissapointed"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who enjoys hearing the author whine about her life, knock Halloween, and curse in odd places will like this book.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'm looking forward to something that will take me somewhere I haven't been, teach me something or make me laugh out loud. I'm going to listen to Lean In, by Sheryl Sandberg.

What didn’t you like about Jen Lancaster’s performance?

First of all, it was not funny and that was my expectation, I thought I'd be LOLling at least a few times. It was like listening to someone that annoyed you, I was going stop reading it at the 2nd chapter but the book was chosen by a book club friend who is younger than me so I thought I should plug along, stick with it and see what happens. Tell the book club members later what I thought..How can I put this nicely? There are so many other books I should have listened to instead........

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Jen Lancaster's book inspired me to write my own book. That is the best thing about this book.

    Any additional comments?

Another book club member shared my feelings about this book, now I feel like I should have stopped my friends before they wasted their money on this book. No one is rushing to talk about it, we haven't had a gathering yet. This is the first time that I feel like asking for my credit back......I wonder if Lancaster's other books are worthwhile but I'm not going to waste my time.

    "NOT Jen's Best"
Would you be willing to try another one of Jen Lancaster’s performances?

Maybe, I've loved her past "bio" type books.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Not really

    Any additional comments?

This was the least enjoyable of her non fiction, blog type books. She had some funny parts but didn't perform them to portray the comedy.
