Publisher's summary

When Lawrence Anthony learned that the northern white rhino, living in the war-ravaged Congo, was on the very brink of extinction, he knew he had to act. If the world lost the sub-species, it would be the largest land mammal since the woolly mammoth to go extinct. In The Last Rhinos, Anthony recounts his attempts to save these remarkable animals. The demand for rhino horns in the Far East has turned poaching into a dangerous black market that threatens the lives of not just these rare beasts, but also the rangers who protect them. The northern white rhino's last refuge was in an area controlled by the infamous Lord's Resistance Army, one of the most vicious rebel groups in the world. In the face of unmoving government bureaucracy, Anthony made a perilous journey deep into the jungle to try to find and convince them to help save the rhino. An inspiring story of conservation in the face of brutal war and bureaucratic quagmires, The Last Rhinos will move animal lovers everywhere.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Simon Vance is captivating as he recounts conservationist Lawrence Anthony's adventures in seeking to protect endangered animals in Africa... Vance heightens the suspense in these tense moments and is expansive in conveying Anthony's descriptions of life on his Thula Thula Reserve in South Africa and the assorted animals who live there. Anthony's dedication to conservation is admirable, and Vance vividly depicts his efforts for listeners." (AudioFile Magazine)

"A riveting account by a compassionate, dedicated man." (Kirkus)

Great listen

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Great narrating too. As sad as the subject is, it's necessary to hear.

WOW. Much respect for Mr. Anthony

Wonderful story and amazing resilience by Mr. Anthony. Like this so much that I've gone back and listening to his first two books now. Wild animals are such amazing creatures. Smart and intelligent beyond measure.

Elightening

I read the Elephant Whisperer a year ago and loved it! I decided to try The Last Rhinos and was not disappointed. This book was eye opening. With both The Elephant Whisperer and The Last Rhinos I laughed, got angry, and cried. These books are fantastic not only because they are entertaining (and shockingly non-fiction) but also because they inspire the reader to make a difference somehow, in any way they can. It wasn't until the end of the book that I found out the Lawrence Anthony had died shortly after this book was completed and this truly saddened me. I thank him and his team for there work as conservationists. I hope that Lawrence Anthony's wife's book is added to Audible soon (called An Elephant in My Kitchen, by Francoise Malby-Anthony).

Very good and follow up to Elephant Whisperer

I actually enjoyed this book more than I thought. At the beginning, it was good, and then it kind of went down a political loophole. While that was interesting at times it really wasn’t why I tuned into this book. I wanted more of the connection that he had with the animals and what his life was like out there. This does show a lot of that, but it also runs into the political which I was not super interested in. I am glad I picked it up and listen to it because we did get to see those lovely moments between him and the elephants as well as some of the other animals. I do love listening to that. I do applaud him for what he tried to do with the war over there being a peacekeeper.

I was surprised at the ending and the afterward. Gave me all the feels!

I listened to this on audio. Simon Vance does a great job with the narration as usual.

Lawrence Anthony inspiration and fascination

He operates with no fear, and all his stories are captivating.
I have read all 3 of his books and fully enjoyed them all. Where they could be initially thought of as too sad or violent to read, that is not the case. Lawrence inspires with his amazing heroics, wit, commitment, and ingenuity. His heartfelt and deep dedication to all that is beautiful and wild is undertaken in a matter-of-fact and intelligent way, driven by his passion for the animals. Fantastic.

Amazing gratitude

I have tremendous gratitude for lawrence Anthony, Francoise, and the rest of the people dedicated to conservation efforts. This book is one of the most grueling and inspiring books I’ve ever read. It illumines humans as well as animals. It gives me despair but also just enough hope to not give up hope. To everyone who helps guard animals and land and who make honest efforts at communion with the and each other—especially Lawrence and his team—thank you so very much.

Can't Get Enough of Lawrence Anthony

Thank you Graham Spence for writing Anthony's stories about his life and his fight to bring justice to animals who have traditionally had no voice. I have listened to all but one book about Lawrence Anthony on Audible and frankly, it's the best way to embrace the whole story. What a man he was. What a difference he made to so many animals but also people as this story reveals.
