Publisher's summary

"I've started horses since I was 12 years old and have been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over. I've tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep from getting myself killed. I started to realize that things would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does. This method works well for me because of the kinship that develops between horse and rider."
—Buck Brannaman

In The Faraway Horses, Buck Brannaman shares his renowned methods for horse training and provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Robert Redford's movie The Horse Whisperer, for which he was the technical adviser.

Critic reviews

"Buck Brannaman is part of a lineage of skilled horsemen, and for the horses he works with, it is about trust and understanding, not submission." (Robert Redford)

The Faraway Horses

I have grown up in a similar manner that Buck Brannaman did and to hear his story and see how successful he has made it in the horse world gives me hope and inspiration to continue on my own journey.

This book reminded me to be patient and trusting, not only with my horses but in life. To expect the best out of people and truly give them a chance no matter what they’ve been through or what they have done.

Truly couldn’t recommend this book more to just about anyone. From life to horses he covers it all and I’m sure you’ll find something inspiring out of it just as I did!

Fantastic read!

This book was a great reveal into life of Buck Brannaman. I listened to it on a trip and will buy a hard copy as well.
I'd already seen Buck the movie. I also own a couple of Buck Brannaman's DVDs. I thoroughly enjoyed the nlook inside Buck's private life. And can't wait to attend his clinics.

So good I read it Twice!

I have always loved & respected horses, so this book got my attention from the get-go. However, the human experience that was portrayed among the many various characters was also most authentically drawn. People, like horses responses to life events from previous experiences can be predictable. However, this book provided me with much to ponder long after the finish. Our hero had many opportunities for giving up, but instead he carried on and kept growing. Inspiring. Educational. Fun read! Beside that, I love cowboys.

Excellent

I read the book a few years ago and loved it. Listening to it is even more enjoyable. Thank you Buck Brannaman for all you’ve done with horses and helping people see things from a new perspective.

Wish there two Buck’s we need more men like him

Buck Brannaman and his wife are so amazing I think I have a tiny crush on both of them. These two have chosen to find only good amidst the depths of despairiy, adversity, and raw agozimg personal pain. Even while surrounded by the fog of what must have felt like never ending torture, they choose hope, kindness, love for mankind (and horses) and unimaginable forgiveness. Devoting their lives now to spread only optimism and respect to humanity and horse alike. With a willingness to impart with us his knowledge and example so we may not suffer what he has suffered. Such gifts as Buck Brennaman’s can only be attained when clawed from the depths of adversity, despair and a darkness so encompassing that it is almost impossible for hope, love, and compassion to penetrate that darkness, solid as brick wall built from the inside out and almost impossible to escape. But he did do it!!! I don’t know how he survived but he DID survive it!!!! And I can only be grateful he did. If only each of us could emulate one or two of his remarkable character traits; what a different world we would live in.
Quick note about his wife, how can she be that hot and still be an absolute freaking stud. I remember watching Buck for the first time and seeing his wife and thinking holy cow way to go Buck. She is drop dead gorgeous and a Titan in her own right. I couldn’t shake the thought of how unfair it was for her to still be so strikingly beautiful when for most of the rest of us that bloom of youth has more faded to a bloom of the saggy middle. And from the looks at it, she doesn’t even have to try, this life is so unfair. Even thru TV her smile can light an entire room and she is completely oblivious of her effect. I swear sometimes I just must not be Gods favorite . I mean really who gets that many talents and gifts in life, unless of course they were her birthright or she worked her ass off for it just like Buck. I think what makes her so stunning is the light radiates from within. A true rarity, when a person is as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside.

Poor gorgeous Riatta how will she ever find a man that can begin to fill such large shoes left by an adoring and loving father. And heaven help the poor courageous soul, who dares to darken the porch of the Brennamen household trying to date their baby girl. I don’t even think Navy SEALs have those kind of guts. Oh, I just split my sides again imagining Buck luring this young man to ride one of his horses, saying no really she is an old gal with no spit left in her. Probably be the last we see of Mr.. Young man if he survives the ride at all. God loves ultra protective parents.

Quick note to the Director, I am a connoisseur of documentaries, and ran an advertising agency for over 10 years. So I tend to be a truly wicked blunt reviewer and will pass within 10 minutes unless it has been handled by a truly gifted, professional, I have no patience for a poorly framed poorly paced, poorly lighted, etc. etc. documentary. I also believe an incredible documentary is much harder to produce than a movie. I would have wagered large odds that this was nowhere near your first one. I would not change one word or 30 secs of it. I can only imagine what you had to leave on the cutting room floor. Please produce more you obviously have a gift for it.
I
always have to leave on a light note so, one part of the documentary where Buck, truly made me try to hold my sides in: was when he was dust busting his RV discussing how Oprah is pretty smart and you never know where you’re going to pick up some useful information and according to Oprah, the most powerful aphrodisiac is a man running a vacuum. I think, all women would concur. And only a genius Director would know to leave that in.

I have fallen in love with you and your family as you shared your story in such a transparent and authentically painful at times, way. May the light continue to shine on you and your family, as you willingly continue to sacrifice to do the right thing every day.

Fantastic book

Loved listening to every bit of it. As an inexperienced horse owner I listened and absorbed Buck’s story on many levels. What a enormous blessing.
