He describes the personalities, the camaraderie, and the stunts with which they entertain their weekly audiences until the day of his 300 mph crash that took Top Gear off the air and plunged a nation into mourning. The day of the crash, his rescue and the flight to hospital in a coma are described, and then Mindy recounts the anxious waiting until he finally emerges from his coma to immediately pull out all his life-support equipment.
Richard then pieces together the stages of recovery as his shattered mind slowly reforms. We learn exactly what happened to him and the milestones in his slow recovery to full health. The final chapter recounts the return to Top Gear and the screening of the events of that fateful day.

It was ok, I expected a bit more so was quite disappointed.
It was the Rob Louw book -Stories I only tell my friends' and WHAT A DIFFERENCE and I've fallen in love with audiobooks story telling
While Richard is enormously Entertainng on TV I was slightly disappointed in how his voice translates in audible. His wife has 'cute voice' but not for audio
Interesting story from an interesting guy, but it felt like they chopped a lot of detail for the abridged version. Would have been a much better listen as unabridged. :(
The emotion and trajedy.
None that I can think of.
Oh yes... they made it far more compelling.
"Never scrape your head on the ground at 300 mph"
I like RH. He's funny and a great presenter. He's a good Englishmen who tries to be American. So he nearly kills himself in this rocket car on Top Gear and decided to write about it. It will get you in the throat as it's hard not to visualize the pain everyone was going through and his frustration. Great listen.
If you are a fan of Top Gear you really need to listen to this. You know Richard had a bad crash. You know he was quite different for a while after returning. You know the BBC won't ever air that episode again.
But you don't know what Richard and his family and friends and colleagues really went through to bring him back to being a part of the show. This book was truly heart felt in its writing and delivery by Richard and his wonderful wife Mindy.
A raw emotional roller coaster of a story.Brilliant in all ways!!Hard to stop listening.
The fact that although He's "just a bloke from Top Gear",he's also a husband and family man!!
You can feel the pain and love coming through!!
Certainly makes you think of your own relationships!!
I drive a lot so might as well make good use of that time.
I think it would have been better if it was an unabridged version.
I liked the collaborative effort of both Hammond's telling the story together.
The emotion expressed by both Richard and Mindy in telling this story.
I absolutely loved this story. When Mindy Hammond starts talking about how scared she was, how hopeful she was, and how much she loves her husband, you cannot help but be moved. The emotion in her voice as she recounts the days and weeks after Richard's accident...it really moved me, and I wish these guys continued success and all the best.
The book begins with an autobiography of Richard's early years as a kid and as he was getting into broadcasting, and I thought that was interesting.
The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars is because it's abridged; I'd really love to hear the full story of these two incredible people.
Forensic Mysteries, Paranormal, Cozies and yet more mysteries. "Don't care who dies in the movie as long as the dog lives."
personal, heartfelt, deep
His other two books, although this one deals with the tragedy and road to recovery after his crash.
I have read the 2nd and 3rd books and like them as well. On the Edge is for those who watched episode when the crash happened and wanted to know more about his real life experiences.
Tears and laughter. Listening to his stories fill a void that is missing by watching the Top Gear alone.
A love story mixed with good humour, near tragedy and excellent story line...
The whole thing whizzed along and was easy to follow or pick up on during a break in listening
Both great as themselves
Recommended highly....and I don't do these review things....so it's a high recommendation
"A lesson for us all?"
The ups & downs the smiles & tears as experienced by so many of us out there in the real world, beautifully narrated by both Richard & Mindy allowing one to share in the emotional rollercoaster hearing the story unfold from both sides of the fence, I am not one normally interested in hearing about the hurt & pain suffered in others life?s but this title had me intrigued from the start, I had to listen right through to the end even though I thought I knew how it ended, the anguish, the desperation of ones life clearly came through, Mindy obviously upset but having the strength for both made me realise how wonderful it was to have the support of loved ones around, sometimes I feel we all take that for granted, I shared in both their pain and thier fear?s as if living it myself eventually pulling through, empathic in Mindy cause, they I think were fortunate that tragedy brought them closer, may be this is a lesson for us all? I bless them both and wish them every success for the future, and I would like to say simply thank you to them for sharing a segment of their lives with me.
The music between chapters was a great choice and added that something special.
"Well worth a listen."
Having been a fan of Richard's since he first appeared on Top Gear I was expecting this book to be both fascinating and funny. What I wasn't expecting was to sit in the waiting room at the railway station with tears in my eyes listening to his wife Mindy read her thoughts and feelings about his accident!
A very moving, frank and amusing autobiography. I would recommend this book to anyone.
On the edge starts with a brief summary of Richards work history but then goes into detail regarding the accident.
The audio includes his wife talking with feeling about the accident and recovery...very moving.
This is a great audio book to listen too....well worth the purchase...enjoy
"Touching and Thought-Provoking"
This audio book version of On the Edge concentrates mainly on Richard Hammond's rocket-car accident and the impact it had on his life and family in the few months that followed. The opening chapters, read by Richard, are entertaining and provide a good background to his career, although certain elements have obviously been omitted for this abridged version. Richard also reads the closing chapters, but the main focus of the title, his time in hospital and recovery, is read by his wife Mindy (Amanda).
She pours her heart and soul into the book, and its clear that she still finds certain passages deeply upsetting. I was hugely impressed by her love, dedication and commitment to Richard and her family, and the touching way they re-found each other after his accident. It's hard, if not impossible to be anything other than captivated by the story, and I'd recommend it to anyone, not just fans of Top Gear.
"On the edge Richard Hammond"
I found this book very moving. By listening to the people concerned on the MP3 player has more effect than just reading the book. I highly recomend this audio book.
I own the hardback but hadn't read it for years, I thought I'd get the audiobook and listen to it again.
A lot of the book is missing - I presume because it is quite repetitive - a lot of while he was in hospital wouldn't make great audio, but having had a brain tumour and having had brain surgery I wanted to hear how it affected those around Richard.
Reading the book and reading Mindy's experiences really helped me to understand, I was hoping to get the same experience this time but unfortunately most of the book seems to be missing.
"Buy Another Book"
I don't know where to begin with this one. I suppose if you love Top Gear then you sort of should like this book................I'm not fussed either way. This book left me feeling flat and I have to admit that I did not finish it !!
"On the edge"
I thought it was really good to hear the story from Richard Hammond him self. It gave it a personal feel. I think it is a good read and amazing story and shows how good the hospitals can be in the uk.
Candid. Well written, well read - highly recommended
"The Hamsters wife is the star"
The book is no doubt a must for those who are Top Gear regulars. The first few chapters covering how Hammond got the top gear job is good but to be fair un exceptional. The short segment that covers the rocket car accident is factual but gives nothing more than most of already know.
Then Mindy takes over the narration and it becomes Mindys story for the next chapters. The story is remarkable, the narration emmotional and absorbing. The closeness of the Top Gear team, the larger than life Clarkson and the outpouring of support from the british public shine through. Is it only in Britain that a presenter of a car program can be in every household prayers for a month ??
This is not a book just for the Hamster fans and top gear devotees. Listen to the mid section with wives and girl friends and it will have them weeping for days.
I am unsure if I enjoyed the book or was just moved by it but it is worth listening too for far more than an account of that amazing accident.
