Good book Cringe worthy narrator

Why have the narrator introduce herself at the beginning of the novel? It just distracts from the novel and inserts her ostentatious personality. She over emotes at every opportunity. Hearing her act like a child is just creepy not to mention her swallowing saliva. Ick.

Excellent Story and narration

The story was well developed and engaging. I particularly appreciated Ms. Franklin’s introduction and Explanation about how she would narrate this book.

Wow

Confidence. This could never b a first novel. I can imagine the editors look after the first hour!! Interesting but????! And then it gets hoooooof! Mick zHerron has become my favorite author. Every book is stand alone great. And Julia Franklin read the HELL out of this. She gets Mick and ID brilliant. One of those few narrators you go looking to see what else have they done’?? Mick needs aHulu platform for his work. This book would make a brilliant movie. Anyway.... start listening!

Great story, fantastic narrator!

I don't understand some of the previous reviewers' comments about the narrator. She is incredible. I would put her up in my top five favorite narrators - and I listened to more than 50 audiobooks this year. She is a classically trained actress and she adds so much texture to the story in her narration. I absolutely loved it.

Mick Herron's writing, as always, is incredible. I loved the Slough House series, and this has made me want to listen to all of his books and I'm enjoying all of them. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this, it's definitely worth the credit. Great story, great complex characters... and I love that Bad Sam Chapman is in there.

Horrible narrator

The breathy, staccato delivery with annoying upwards inflections at the end of a sentence made me want to give up and demand a refund from Audible. She is one of the worst narrators ever. She ruined the book for me and I love Nick Herron's work.

Decent story but problematic narration

I liked the story—classic Herron—but the narrator makes the man with the gun sound like he is speaking English with an Eastern European/Russian accent, with dropped articles etc, when he actually speaks Spanish and his name is Jaime Segura. It’s a pretty big error and I’m surprised no one producing this noticed that Jaime sounds like no Spanish speaker ever.

worst reader ever

I tried to get past it because I am a huge Herron fan and love the audio editions of the Slough House series, but this reader is incredibly overbearing. Way way too much emphasis on every. single. word. The scenery chewing overacting is such that I couldn't follow the plot—far too distracted by the overdone voicing. (Not good in so many ways, including: why does she use a thick, Boris-and-Natasha Russian accent to voice a hispanic character????) I got maybe halfway through, kept having to rewind whole chapters to try to hear the story rather than the hamfest vocal performance, and finally just couldn't take it any more, gave up and returned for refund credit.

I love Mick Heron but

This isn’t his best. Writing is clever but the story is too drawn out. A few less repeated phrases and themes might have helped.

I love the narration.

The narrator of this book, Julia Franklin, is one of the very best. The voices and intonations that she gives to the different characters make the book come to life. I highly recommend this book and the other Mick Herron’s (Zoe Boehm series) that she has narrated.
