Publisher's summary

Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal, Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel offers an unforgettable account of Hitler's horrific reign of terror in Night. This definitive edition features a new translation from the original French by Wiesel's wife and frequent translator, Marion Wiesel.

Night is an unmistakably autobiographical account of the author's own gruesome experiences in Nazi Germany's death camps. Told through the eyes of 14-year-old Eliezer, the tragic fate of the Jews from the little town of Sighet unfolds with a heart-wrenching inevitability. Even as they are stuffed into cattle cars bound for Auschwitz, the townspeople refuse to believe rumors of anti-Semitic atrocities. Not until they are marched toward the blazing crematory at the camp's "reception center" does the terrible truth sink in.

Recounting the evils at Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Wiesel's enduring classic of Holocaust literature raises questions of continuing significance for all future generations: How could man commit these horrors, and could such an evil ever be repeated?

Critic reviews

"Elie Wiesel’s memoir of life in the Nazi death camps has been reissued with a new translation by Wiesel’s wife, Marion. Read by George Guidall, this new edition is a brilliant and haunting reminder of these horrific crimes, as well as a testament to Wiesel’s faith and resilience. Guidall is the ideal reader, and gives yet another masterful performance. Every word Guidall utters reminds the listener of the fear, the suffering, and the hatred Wiesel witnessed and experienced as he drew upon his every instinct to fight for survival. The audio edition also contains a new preface by Wiesel, as well as Guidall’s performance of Wiesel’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. NIGHT is already a classic, and this audio edition is a superb complement to the text. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award." (AudioFile magazine)

"[A] slim volume of terrifying power." (The New York Times)

Should be read by everyone

This is one of the most remarkable books of the last 100 years. It is Elie Wiesel’s account of his experiences as a fifteen and sixteen-year-old Transylvanian Jewish boy whose family was incarcerated, tortured and killed by the Nazi’s in the final years of World War II. Wiesel ended up at Auschwitz and Buna and then survived the death march to Buchenwald where he was finally rescued in 1945. First published in Yiddish and then French in 1955 and English in 1960, it has sold over 6 million copies in the United States. Night has been translated into over 30 languages. Wiesel’s work justifiably earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. His Nobel address and his writings for the 1955 French publication of the book are still true today. “Today, there are anti-Semites in Germany, France, and even the United States who tell the world that the ‘story’ of six million assassinated Jews is nothing but a hoax, and many people, not knowing any better, may well believe them, if not today then tomorrow or the day after.” The book is sometimes difficult to read as it truthfully describes the burning of children, the torture of women and the remarkable will of the survivors. But it is an important story for everyone, and one hopes that it is required reading in many schools throughout the world. It is amazing.

A Must Listen

Open your eyes to the evil of which humans are capable. A book for our time, excellently narrated to bring the emotion of the tragedy. And this is only one account of one survivor. Where as every survivor and every victim would have their own memory. A Must read, recognize the thoughts in ourselves that make us look at others as lesser beings.

Essential reading or listening

Everyone should know this man's story. Not only for those of us interested in human rights or history. It's not a long book. No excuses.

Great.

It's quite emotional but powerful! It makes one to wonder how such evil can truly exist against our own.

Important book!

"In the beginning there was faith - which is childish; trust - which is vain; and illusion - which is dangerous."

Elie Wiesel

My heart vibrates in song

How does one rave about a book with the content so harsh, so haunting?

It hurts to remember!

In this particular country and this space in time, this book takes it’s place as one of the best books I’ve read. Wiesel’s Nobel acceptance speech and preface renewed my will to continue the work of “never forgetting” the past.
