Publisher's summary

Audie Award Nominee, Humor, 2013

For fans of Tina Fey and David Sedaris - Internet star Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, makes her literary debut.

Jenny Lawson realized that the most mortifying moments of our lives - the ones we'd like to pretend never happened - are in fact the ones that define us. In Let's Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson takes listeners on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor.

Chapters include: "Stanley the Magical, Talking Squirrel", "A Series of Angry Post-It Notes to My Husband", "My Vagina Is Fine. Thanks for Asking", and "And Then I Snuck a Dead Cuban Alligator on an Airplane".

Featured Article: The Best Audiobooks for Soothing Anxiety

The care of family, friends, and a trusted therapist, practicing mindfulness, engaging in calming hobbies like yoga, journaling, walking in nature, or listening to music—these are just a few of the strategies that can ease the overwhelm. We’ve handpicked some of the best audiobooks that can soothe the symptoms of anxiety, break patterns of negative or unhealthy thought, and help ground or comfort you when things get tough.

Editor's Pick

Alas, poor Jenny…
"Just like the taxidermized, Yorick-like mouse on the cover, Let's Pretend This Never Happened is awkward, weird, and hilarious—as is the writer, Jenny Lawson, of The Bloggess fame. Her narration, too, makes this listen truly sing—quite literally when she belts out the chapter titles like a manic, singsong opera star. The whole package is so genuine and vulnerable that I frequently laughed to the point of tears as she regaled her experiences dealing with anxiety, depression, and social missteps. This is a title that could only be written by Lawson herself."

ridiculously funny

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! I have recommended it to ALL my friends. I love that I got to hear the author's voice so I knew exactly the tone she was going for.
It is HILARIOUS. I've listened to it twice now.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite characters are her father, simply because you cannot make that stuff up.

Which character – as performed by Jenny Lawson – was your favorite?

So many... but I loved her reenacting any interaction she had with Victor.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed and cried. But the moments when I did cry, I was quickly able to laugh or at least smile again soon after.

Any additional comments?

This is damn funny, Y'all. You will not be sorry if you pick this book up or decide to listen to it. Jenny Lawson is an amazingly honest and funny writer. I wish there was more out there like her.

Her personality. I love how she sings the titles of the chapters! It felt like she was just telling you stories of her life, not reading a book.

Second book way better

Stumbled upon this one after reading Furiously Happy. Liked that book way more. It is still nice to hear the writer read the book herself!

Hilarious

Jenny Lawson is completely nuts in a totally wonderful and admittedly relatable way. She charms the reader with her own voice - perfect for her zany and rip-roaring narrative. Truly, this book may be better in the audio, as it is a delight to hear her tell her story(ies). And, as she notes, the audio is slightly more expensive than the hard/paperback, so let's give her a boost people. Have a listen. You'll love it.

I can't give it enough stars!

Would you consider the audio edition of Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) to be better than the print version?

While the print version has the hilarious photographs, the audio has Jenny Lawson reading it herself, the sound of a cocking shotgun for bullet points and outtakes that didn't make it into the print version, along with the play at home drinking game for every time Jenny says "Vagina", which she absolutely screams at the end.

What other book might you compare Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) to and why?

I'd compare this book to the memoirs written by Jen Lancaster like "Bright Lights, Big Ass", which also was hilarious.

Which scene was your favorite?

I'd be hard pressed to pick one - but just randomly I'll pick the chapter about Jenny's conversation with Victor when she got lost going to pick up milk.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Chupacabras - the silent killer

Any additional comments?

I loved this book. Loved loved loved. Hilarious and sad at some points but it just made me happy in general. While I can't identify with taxidermy or wearing a deer sweater, I can identify with being unconventional and having mental illness.
