Publisher's summary

On July 22, 1992, Colombian druglord Pablo Escobar walked out of the luxurious prison he built for himself and disappeared into the Colombian jungle. His audacious escape destroyed the nation's tenuous cease-fire with its infamous narcos, and pushed it into open war with the Medellin drug cartel.

Over the coming days and weeks, the United States launched a joint military and intelligence operation with the Colombian government, assembling a team of expert personnel and an arsenal of state-of-the-art weaponry and surveillance technology the likes of which the world had never seen. Their mission: to track down Pablo.

But this time, they knew it would not be enough to just capture Escobar. This time, they would have to finish the job. This time, they were going to kill him.

Another great one by Bowden

Anyone familiar with Black Hawk Down or Guests of the Ayatollah understand how Bowden writes. He takes first hand accounts of the people that were there and tells a story as if it was a novel. Anyone interested in the 80’s drug war or US drug policy will enjoy the book. Only complaint is that it was abridged

Very Entertaining

Great story about the life and end of Pablo Escobar. Focuses more on his activities and life outside the U.S. Reads like a novel. Great reader.

Real life imitates art : Pablo Escobar

It is difficult to conceive a story were the bad guys challenge to authorities and take control of a country through intimidation and fear. Yet it is the real story of Pablo Escobar and of his acolytes that controlled Columbia for about twenty years.
It is a very well written book by Mark Bowden, easy to read and packed with action, intrigues and passion. A fun reading !

I keep waiting for the movie

I loved this book. After I read it I thought "this would make a great movie" I think that they have a script and even an actor to play the main character. I just loved this book because it had so many twists and turns. I have to hand it to the Colombian police force. They really figured out how to get to him.

Expected more

I was expecting a lot more out of this book than I got. It felt like it was over just as it was getting started.

Good attempt my the author.

A lot of detail about the aftermath. Not enough about the business. Would have liked to hear more about the business overall.

Bowden hits another home run

Bowden is one of the few authors who can read his own work and keep you intrigued. The trade-off is that he does sound like a journalist rather than a story teller.
You won't find a more well-researched account of the drug wars up close and personal. A fascinating read and one of the books I found myself listening to in my driveway.
My only beef - it's abridged...

Watch Narcos instead

Mark Bowden is a great author (I liked BHD) but shouldn’t narrate his own books.
