Publisher's Summary

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Laurie Notaro isn't exactly a domestic goddess - unless that means she fully embraces her genetic hoarding predisposition, sneaks peeks at her husband's daily journal, or has made a list of the people she wants on her Apocalypse Survival team (her husband's not on it). Notaro chronicles her chronic misfortune in the domestic arts, including cooking, cleaning, and putting on Spanx while sweaty (which should technically qualify as an Olympic sport).

Housebroken is a rollicking new collection of essays showcasing her irreverent wit and inability to feel shame from defying nature in the quest to make her own Twinkies, to begging her new neighbors not to become urban livestock keepers, to teaching her eight-year-old nephew about hobos.

"Nothing new, funny or clever here"
    What disappointed you about Housebroken?

Not original, not funny, not clever and the narration was horrible.

Would you ever listen to anything by Laurie Notaro again?

    No.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She helped distract, but the book was horrible on its own merits.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Unfortunately NO!

    "Terrible Audio!!"
    Any additional comments?

I am halfway through this book and I am writing this review on the basis of the Audible file, only. The sound/audio on this book is awful. It sounds like it was recorded in the author's bathrooms and closets. This is the first Audible book purchased that I had this issue with!

I laughed, I cried. I laughed until I cried. The narration makes it truly great.

"Relatable and funny in some respects"

My initial impression was that the author's style of writing was too forced and without a natural flow; like she was trying too hard to come off as a good writer. I was able to let go of that impression when she got onto the topic of trying to be organized. As she shared her challenges in that regard, she could have just as easily been talking about me. I found myself smirking and shaking my head in agreement. For the most part I enjoyed the book, and would consider another one of her works in the future.

I have never heard of bacon preferences referred to as "white people bacon" and "black people bacon"; limp vs crispy. Having spent a few years in my younger days waiting tables in restaurants that had bacon on the menu, I found that PEOPLE either preferred bacon one way or another with absolutely no correlation to race. There were some other labels that I found to be in poor taste, but when you're the author, I guess you can decide what does or does not go in your book.

Much of the narration sounded like some of the women from The Golden Girls, particularly the voice of Estelle Getty. Overall, the narration was very good.

    "Housebroken"

Housebroken is a book of laugh out loud essays!
It is a pleasant compilation of everyday life material that we can all relate to. These are conversations that you would feel safe having with your best friends.
The author reads this book on Audible which makes it even funnier. It is as if she is your best friend .
So funny and particularly nice to read in short time spans.

The main character sounds like a fun person, someone I think I could be friends with. The description of Eugene Oregon makes me want to visit. Fun book overall.
