From USA Today bestselling author Emily McIntire comes an angsty second-chance romance and the first interconnected standalone in the Sugarlake series.

Alina Carson meets Chase Adams when she’s eleven years old, after he moves in down the street carrying nothing but a chip on his shoulder and dimples in his cheeks.

Immediately she falls, loving him before she even knows what loving is. But becoming best friends with Chase’s little sister means that he’s off-limits, no matter how much their connection screams for something more.

Chase never cared much for following the rules. Abandoned by everyone who was supposed to love him, he’s broken and insecure, choosing to push others away before they have a chance to hurt him. But there’s something about the girl with golden hair, and before he can stop himself, he’s sneaking through her window, whispering his deepest secrets beneath her glow ‘n stick stars.

As time goes on and they get older, he decides to give their love a chance, no matter what anyone else thinks. But old habits die hard, and when tragedy strikes, Chase is back to doing what he does best.

Ruining everything.

Chase disappears, and years pass, leaving Alina with no choice but to pick up her broken pieces and move on. Until one day, he’s back. All grown up and taking over his family’s business.

When Alina and Chase are thrown together and forced to work in the same building, old feelings resurface, and Alina quickly realizes that Chase is on a mission, determined to right the wrongs of his past.

Starting with her.

This was a great story about a second chance romance and how addiction can affect our lives. I love how the author foretold of the next books in the series. Can’t wait to listen.

A second chance romance

I can't say enough good things. I have a million quotes I could give you that would make your heart full but I won't spoil anything! Goldi & Boy Scout are amazing. Meeting so young, so broken and still fall in love! Then meeting again 8 years later, adults & healed & falling in love all over again! . Chase doesn't back down. He tells her exactly what he wants. That man could make me fall in love with ice. He just says some of the most perfect things.

I loved the audio book. I think the narrators did a good job. With one exception - freaking Mason. I know it’s only two narrators but my god Mason sounds like a 50 year old smoker ( yes I know he does smoke). I’ve read all the books in this series, this will be the first time listening. And I hope it’s a different voice actor for the last book. Mason should not sound like this 😂

Love this book

Overall i enjoyed their story.

But more often than not i felt so frustrated with both characters.
Both had terrible communication skills or lack there of.

Fmc hardly stood up for herself. Felt loney but also didnt let anyone help her by not telling anyone her struggles.

MMC was just a jerk to her for most of the book. His growth was set up so well yet as soon as he can change and use his growth to stop any misunderstandings he once again keeps his mouth shut which leads to another quick misunderstood heartbreak for fmc.

I got very emotional along with FMC whenever MMC would inadvertently hurt her. I wanted to smack mmc when he had his college “friend” ugh i personally hated that whole storyline.

Both of them were kinda terrible friends to those around them honestly very self centered on their own problems.

Im glad they eventually realized that. If anything. I hope to see them throughout the series and maybe they redeem themselves on that front.

First couple I’ve ever felt were toxic for each other. Maybe it’s just me. 😅

...and on and on. This started out interesting with good potential but sadly, it got old fast. Would have made a good 6 hour listen. Eleven hours is way too long. I couldn't wait for it to end. Narrators are good at least. I search out books that they narrate.

Dragged on...

I really enjoyed the story for the most part. The narrators are AWFUL. Her southern drawl is trash but it’s nothing compared to his “other” voices. His female voice sounds like Eddie Murphy on the nutty professor. His other male voices make me cringe. Sounds like someone who has smoked for 40 years. Ugh! What sucks even more is they are the same narrators for the next 3 books.

LOVED THE STORY, HATED THE NARRATORS

I had to finish this book on my kindle. The male narrator made my skin crawl.

Horrible male narrator

Devoured this in 24 hours. This story warms my soul, seeing the characters journey in young love and then back to each other amidst their troubles.

Great narration and beautiful story

Idk if it’s good or bad that an author made me hate a character so much in the beginning lol. I understand chase had issues but come on. He pissed me off so much in part 1 I was ready to stop listening because of how he was acting and putting others before Goldie but he got better as time went on tho I feel like he could’ve been better with some things in Part 2.

As for the performance I loved the female voice actor but the male va was fine but him trying to do everyone else’s voice was cringy and I almost couldn’t take it seriously.
