Publisher's summary

When a massive solar flare strikes the Western Hemisphere, it leave the planet's electronic infrastructure destroyed. Jared, who has spent his entire life behind a computer screen, must navigate his way home through a quickly deteriorating society. Shortly after the solar event, Jared is taken in by a grouchy, bourbon drinking old man named Bart. The two men form a special relationship as Bart mentors Jared in a new and dangerous world. While out searching for food, Jared finds a seven-year old girl and brings her back to Bart's place. Both men flounder in their efforts to care for the child in a world not fit for strong men. Jared is in a life-and-death race trying to evolve faster than the world around him is devolving.

Enjoyed listening but…

I really enjoyed listening to this book but had a hard time getting past the character stereotypes— the white computer nerd who finds strength he didn’t know he had, the white jaded ex cop who’s really a teddy bear, the tough white soldier who has seen enough, the Mexican gang members who kill for sport. See a trend? And why do all the LA cops have New York accents?
The story itself is a good one and makes for an easy read that is hard to put down. I’m convinced now that I need to stock up on rations and buy some firearms so it was pretty convincing. I just think it could’ve been a little more.

Starts out slow

MC is at first a bit of a dweeb. But he meets up with a grizzly old skilled dude and precede to survive picking up a young girl in the onset. As I said it moves slower than most. The narrator’s voice for the old guy makes me wish he’s clear his throat, but I’m sure it’s his version of the character. Will be more in this series and I’ll definitely get the next. In these type genre you have those that are fast action filled and then these steady along ones. I happen to like both if they are written well. This one was.

Great book. Bad reading.

Please pick someone else to read the next book. This guy did a good Job for Bart's voice, and that's about it. He made Jared sound like a sickly old man. It's like Bart was the only voice he put effort into. Very hard to listen to.

Awesome book can't wait for book number 2

This is an awesome book because it's not the typical survivalist trying to survive a scenario like this. Rick T you did a great job on this book can't wait for the next book to come out in the series . Hopefully soon it is September 2020 right now two thumbs up

Im looking forward too book 2 with Jared.

Lots of detail in the characters and the geography setting. I really enjoyed how Jared and Bart developed.. Jared young and soft, Bart old and salty teaching the boot...
Hopefully Jared will sleep in a hammock in book 2.

Good

Once I sped up the narration to 1.3, I couldn't put it down. Usually these stories have some prepper who's been planning for years, and knows exactly what to do, so having the main character be some tech/idea guy with zero survival skills was a novel approach. The only jarring note was the sudden random introduction of a couple new characters toward the very end of the book - seems like we should have met them sooner if they were important to the story arc. Anyway, I did enjoy the book, and will look at getting the next in the series.
