Publisher's summary

Apocalyptic magic shifting the balance of the world. A reality humanity never believed possible. Survival isn’t enough.

For Ronan, life in the Bunker was seldom exciting. He had spent all of his time trapped below the surface of the Earth, exploring the same floors over and again. Returning to the surface had always been a taboo subject, something that had always clearly not been an option yet was a necessity. When nature itself fights back against exploration, you stay where it’s safe.

When a mere inkling of hope appeared, however, Ronan and his friends jumped on the opportunity. On the surface for the first time in a generation, they discover a world changed beyond their imagination. When threatened by the unknown, and against anything that might be considered logical, they recruit the help of one of the things that caused the apocalypse. The group is determined to fight fire, vine, and pickaxe for every scrap of freedom and turn magic to their own devices.

Attuned Fallout

Enjoyable post apocalypses fallout with magic story. Very light on the litrpg elements so you aren't stuck listening to endless character sheets. My only complaint is the minimal character growth, outside of powers. I do really appreciate the team dynamic of two guy and one girl where they act like the life long friends they are and aren't forced into the standard love triangle / reverse harem other authors might go for.

Narration by Gabriel Michael is excellent

A struggle

I wanted to like this book, its a fun setup but it's just too flawed for me.
I out right hated Dani, she's mercurial and let's towards being mean most of the time. When she gets a pet, she acts like her friends are stupid for being wary of a monster that just tried to kill them, then when Ronan is helped by a monster that demonstrates its desire to help, she treats it like a threat and him like an idiot for thinking a monster could be good. (After she literally did the same thing!)
Sam, Ronan, and Dani are supposed to be adults but they act like young teenagers most of the time.

I like the magic system and setup for that, I think its a neat approach and if it was just Ronan, I'd probably keep ready but I think this is where I'll get off for this series.

It had to be Florida

It had to be Florida where everything's going to kill you now is gonna kill you just a little more aggressively This is one of those stories where doomsday happens but somebody survives it now they have to deal with the aftermath They have to deal with Going outside and seeing what's up there some really good promise and some good parts to it when it comes to the story This should be a good series

Great Narrator, great story, great balls of fire.

Story is well done goes with a tad of a different angle than most. The Mc and the surrounding people in the shelter hunker down finally slowly emerging decades after a cataclysm. A talking entity with a mechanical sense of humor...internal and external conflicts. The sense of discovery/exploration in the new world. I got the title free in a promo event. Glad I did. May have missed it in the pile of others to be added to my TBR. Looking forward to buying book 2.

Fallout 1 meets Tallrock

I received an ARC for this book from the publisher

Performance Review:
This is my first encounter with Gabriel Michael as a VA, though after looking at his depth of work it seems there are a few other books in my queue that he has also done. He did well, and I look forward to listening to the other books he has voiced.

Story Review:
As a first entry in a series this book progresses very methodically. It doesn't fall into the skill farming montages that so many other LitRPGs do but instead focuses on establishing footholds in a now foreign post-apocalyptic world. Mechanics and world-building are strong here and the action is frequent enough that you don't get bored. The three MCs are as competent as they should be considering their origins. They definitely bumble through a few things but again it fits who they are.

I am looking forward to the next book, especially considering the cliffhanger that the book ends on. February can't come soon enough.

Similar books to this title: Equalize (system collapse, town building), Tallrock (town building), Ascend Online (frontier living, town building)

Good start

In some ways this is your typical post apocalyptic LitRPG but there are some nice twists. There is a good amount of time providing some background for the world and the characters. Some of the game mechanics are done in a different way emphasizing percentages. The characters are fun and their interplay is entertaining. This is the first time I have listened to this narrator and he did a good job.

Good book for first entry

The book is a good entry for an upcoming multi book series. The start is a bit slow but does a good job at setting up the beginning of a adventure for our MC’s.

I Found This Mediocre On All Fronts

Although there were only a few ratings, I purchased this book because the ratings that were there gave the book 4.4 stars. I guess it just wasn't for me. I found the storyline and the characters simplistic to the point of being juvenile, impossible for me to take seriously. I don't know if the narration is going through some kind of sound modulation, but I found it difficult to listen to.

So, it's okay. It wasn't horrible, but I didn't finish it, which is a rare thing for me. I started to walk away from it with five hours left but I'm a fan of the genre so I tried to hang in, hoping at some point it would redeem itself. But with just two hours remaining, I simply couldn't find any reason to continue and I knew I wouldn't be continuing in the series. So I abandoned the book. It just didn't do it for me.

Characters and story are like a video game

Characters get all kinds of supposed “magic” virtues but need to kill enemies to power up their “magic” and healing. Not interested in reading a video game. Couldn’t finish.
