Publisher's summary

In Albury, Adrian and his team must face the most terrifying of all enemies: his fellow humans.

Adrian's journey to get to Melbourne continues, and he realizes sometimes the only path to success is to do things slower.

He has promised to accept the quest for Jules' sake, but his interface is also adamant that completing the quest is the only way he reaches Melbourne. Not only will he need to find the fortitude to kill, he will also need to work out how to complete the quest requirements.

Despite everything he has achieved and his own growth, the crime family that has taken over the town of Albury are both stronger and richer than them. They will need to use every trick in the book to defeat them, while knowing that the stakes are real and mistakes have consequences.

Better

Spoilers ahead...
Adrian is getting better backbone and is handling slaughter people better than I expected. I'm frustrated with Adrian constantly getting shortchanged in loot and getting nerfed over and over. I was extremely upset when he broke his minor troll regeneration. I found an entire book about taking down 8 people a little tedious. I just don't get how this family got so powerful so fast. Even with all the luck they had showered on them they got organized faster than I find believable. I hope the next book isn't about taking down 1 person.

Come on!

OK, this was one of the longest, drawn out mind numbing "Spy" missions I have ever read or listened to. Not to mention the mc's internal debates and his vitriol toward others for fighting a war against a slaver. It is a no brainer and for the mc to have such issues makes me wonder about the frigging opinions of Australian people. So one whole book on removing the leadership of a town of slavers and it is still not over but dragged into a darker hole. I really enjoyed the series till this book. I'm hoping the next one will be better. I mean the mc repeats the plan so many times that I lost count. I'm struggling here trying to recover some of my sanity while writing this review. Please continue with the story but for Pete's sake don't make one event take so long or we will never get to Melbourne by the time the author passes away from typing so much fluff to get there. Thank you for the story.

Review

Of all the audiobooks in the series this is my least favorite. My biggest issue with this audiobook is the main character is the exact same person as he was in book 1. there is no character growth. Everything else in the audiobook is great. The best way to describe the main character, imagine if you ask someone to help you with something and they complain through the whole ordeal. You would regret asking that person for help. you would not wanna deal with his/she constant complaining and whining. And that’s the main issue with the character every time he does something he whines about it!!. The universe is great, game mechanics is great, the side characters are great complex. I understand the author is trying to humanize him. But we’ve already gone beyond two books, I don’t see this changing.

I really like to see Adrian get home to his family

I like the series, but slowed down when getting and reading book four because I knew that it would be player vs player kinda book and not a trope that I particularly like. But I finally broke down and picked it up anyway. As I would really like to see Adrian go cross-country and get home safely to his wife and kids. So far the trip has been grueling. With plenty of boss Monsters to fight, it's only by leveling up and with power boosters he's purchased from the traders, that he's made it soooooooo far. And he's less than a third there.
I also got it because of Grant ooh-la-la Cartwright and his performance.
So I girded my loins and dove in. But first there's a mega monster to kill, (oh goody, my jam.) It doesn't really get to the gritty until Adrian's party hits Albury and the actual quest, to take out the mob family of eight controlling the city. Adrian is careful tho and doesn't do anything with out a lot of careful planning. And he's dealing with his own moral compass, because who has the high-ground when murder is involved. To find out what happens grab the book and enjoy listening to Grant Cartwright tell you a story. Extra ⭐ given for narrator.

I'm over this series

In the first book I tolerated the MC being such a winey moron but by the 4th. I have absolutely grown to hate their party.

The authors need spend so much time explaining the most minuscule decisions, forget that he would spend paragraphs explaining .

The series plot is good, the system is good, the narrator is very good. I must can't stand the useless winey drivel anymore.

This was my last in this series, possibly the last I'll purchase from this author.
