Publisher's summary

An English village can be deadly, when your past catches up with you....

In the beautiful rural Somerset village of Lower Hembrow, crammed full with English eccentrics, something is amiss....

Landscape gardener Imogen Bishop has spent the last 30 years trying to forget one fateful school night but when her estranged husband Greg Bishop is found dead in the grounds of her father's Georgian hotel, danger threatens to overwhelm her.

Retired police officer Adam Hennessey, hoping for a peaceful life running his traditional Somerset country pub, finds himself drawn into the unfolding drama in the hotel across the road.

Imogen, Adam and Harley the stray dog form an unlikely partnership as they try to untangle a knot of secrets, solve a murder mystery and bring a killer to justice.

Perry Mason Ending

She set up the story well with believable characters but near the end accelerated with too many contrived clues. Then the Perry Mason ending with the murderer breaking down and explaining all the events. I did finish it.

Exceeded my expectations

Caught me up and kept me listening. Better than I was expecting. Heroes and villains and a spunky dog into the mix!

Entertaining story

Lovely little story. It kept me guessing until the end. Great narrator with accent, but every word was understandable.

A Very Good Mystery

I enjoyed the character development and how the story progressed, carefully dropping hits for arm chair sleuths to figure out the murderer. It was only at the very end that my suspicions were confirmed. A nice love story in the makings as well. I’ll definitely read more by this author.

Charming, But That Solution! . . .

Overall, pleasant and enjoyable. The primary characters are clearly defined and believable. The dialogue is natural and the story and characters well-portrayed by narrator Charlotte Stevens.
Everything plods along just fine until the big reveal. I found the solution to be unpredictable, primarily because too much information has been withheld from the reader. Adam, the retired cop/investigator, has visited characters and performed investigations about which we are not told. The climactic gathering of the suspects in the library (okay, it's a "lounge") is contrived, unnatural, and clichéd.
The pleasant denouement scenes add warmth, but don't redeem the disappointing conclusion to what was an otherwise enjoyable read.

jealousy

A nice cozy mystery. Good characters, and an easy flowing story makes this mystery a delight to read. Home for her father's funeral, landscape gardener Imogen Bishop finds herself tangled up in two murders and a cold case. With the help of retired police officer Adam Hennessey, now local pup owner, Imogen tries to solve the death of her father whose accidental death now looks like murder, the death of her estranged husband on the day of her father's funeral and the death of a classmate years ago. But throw in a lovable stray dog named Harley and you have the makings of a really good read.

very good

I liked it. The characters are interesting, the pace is good, and the mystery keeps you engaged. And there's a big, sweet dog. What more could you ask for?

The narrator does a good job as well.
