Publisher's summary

In a brand-new series installment, New York Times bestselling author, Ian Rankin, returns to his legendary detective—it’s not the first time Rebus has taken the law into his own hands, though it may be the last.

John Rebus stands accused: on trial for a crime that could put him behind bars for the rest of his life.

But what drove a good man to cross the line?

Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke may well find out. Clarke is tasked with the city’s most explosive case in years, an infamous cop, at the center of decades of misconduct, has gone missing. Finding him will expose not only her superiors, but her mentor John Rebus. And Rebus himself may not have her own interests at heart, as the repayment of a past debt places him in the crosshairs of both crime lords and his police brethren.

One way or another, a reckoning is coming – and John Rebus may be hearing the call for last orders…

I love this series. And rankin never lets you down. Lots of action and entwined stories.

Ah Rebis

Ah Rebis. Nothing to add that won't be a spoiler. Good read, nice twists, a not so gentle aging dear man.

Wonderful narrator, wonderful book

My first John Rebus novel. I look forward to slowly making my way backwards, I think, through this exceptional series. In only one book I am attached to and rooting for Rebus, despite his flaws. Great listen. I

The end? Who knows?

Spoiler alert…
Has a lot of the good stuff we expect from are us but I’m disappointed with the ending. I just can’t see him doing what he did. It would also be a disappointing way to go out. Let’s hope he’s acquitted and has one more adventure, finishing on a more fitting note.

Well worth waiting for

I couldn’t wait to pre-order this audiobook and I couldn’t wait to start it. It starts with Rebus in court - as the defendant! Then the book shifts to earlier. All the regular players are there including Siobhan, Malcolm Fox, and Big Ger Cafferty. It was good to read more about Siobhan, doing well in her role as DI. Malcolm is still Malcolm. And Big Ger is now in a wheelchair but still has fingers in all sorts of things.

The book ends back in the courtroom.

I urge anyone to not let this be their first Rebus book.

The story was great. The narration by James Macpherson was perfect. Rankin has done it again!

Love this series but….

I don’t like the hanging ending. Either there will be one more aging Rebus book or Rankin really missed the mark for the last Rankin book. I really have not enjoyed these books as much since Rebus has aged badly and left the police force. On the force he had some legitimacy and power behind him in his fight with crime. But it’s hard to get behind him now. There can be no good outcome so not much point and nothing to really look forward to. I put off getting this latest book because the last one was disappointing so I wasn’t expecting much from this one but in the end I had to read/hear it. To Ian Rankin, I have loved your books! But If there is another book, please give him some dignity and a bit of happiness.

Into the darkness

Justice or vengeance? Who are the villains? Who the heroes? Out out, brief candle. Rankin takes his characters and leads them into the ultimate shadows. Excellent mystery. Performed with stark mastery.

The Final Chapter with Big Ger

Rebus is drawn in by Cafferty to find someone but ends up being used by all concerned. This edition ends with many questions...

Great Scottish accent performance, story is dynamic

Great Scottish accent performance, story is dynamic but just a big square dance of the characters..... who are well developed, and the dialogue among them is interesting within context of the dance

Boring

I love the rebus books. But this one I can’t get my head around. I’m not sure if the writing or what, but nothing happens. Maybe it’s time to go back in time and do young rebus books. I can’t believe it but I’m returning this book.
