Publisher's summary

Book four in the nationally best-selling Manticore Ascendant series, set in the world of David Weber’s multiple New York Times best-selling Honorverse series.

Yesterday, the Star Kingdom of Manticore was a small, unimportant interstellar backwater. A quiet little star nation, only recently recovered from the devastating blow of the Plague Years. More affluent than some, perhaps, but with little to attract trade or interstellar commerce, it had little need for a navy...and even less interest in paying for one.

But Manticore has now become a target. The Star Kingdom isn't certain who is attacking it, or why, or what its mysterious foe can possibly want, but Queen Elizabeth I knows she has to find out. And she knows that whatever some of her subjects think, Manticore does need a navy. And it needs allies, friends like the dynamic Republic of Haven and the Andermani Empire. It needs their trade...and to learn from their more experienced and powerful navies.

It is the job of officers like Travis Long and his wife, Lisa, to acquire that experience. Of utterly inexperienced diplomats like Travis's brother Gavin, Earl Winterfall, to build those alliances.

They have been sent to the powerful Andermani Empire to do just that, for the Imperial Navy is one of the most potent and experienced fleets in the galaxy. But the Andermani have problems of their own. Their Emperor's death is the trigger for insurrection, and now that powerful and experienced navy is locked in civil war.

The Manticoran visitors find themselves squarely in the path of the storm, and before Travis, Lisa, and Gavin can accomplish anything else, they first have to survive.

A favorite series that continues to build in depth

The story is seriously enjoyable to follow and continual character development endears it to the reader. The narrator is balanced and does a variety of voices/accents well. I appreciate that the content is clean (other than a lot of swearing).

My teens and I listened again to the first three in the series before starting this audiobook. This really helped as we followed the flow of the story, however relistening to the series isn’t necessary to enjoy this book. A listener may have to overlook a few references or tie ins, if it’s been a couple years since reading the previous books. The general plot is building, but the main story in the book is unique, and so can be followed well enough to enjoy it. There are some reminders of people and events that the authors have included throughout the book. But really, there’s insufficient time for a total “refresh” of the story -and honestly too much refresh would be frustrating to readers who are tracking already.

Highly recommended. We are anticipating the next, A Call to … , in the series! A definite favorite in our audio library!

Surprisingly strong collaboration

I am leery of three authors involved with creating a novel but these people have collaborated amazingly well and created a great read.

Good read

Deserving addition to the series. Enjoyable read. My only worry is that we will never get to the end of the saga

Book 4 in the series staring Travis Long

Overall it is a good listen. Not the best but I think it is a good story. I suggest reading this series in order, book 1 is the foundation and characters are laid out. Just reading book 4 without reading the other books could confuse.

I hope the series continues.

Fantastic book, OK performance

David Weber’s Manticore Ascendant series is one of the best pieces of science fiction writing I’ve enjoyed ever, and this entry in the series is especially good! However, A Call To Insurrection is also so laden with German that it really needs a German-speaking narrator. Unfortunately it didn’t get it this time. I still recommend giving a listen; the fun of this read really overrides the narrator’s mispronunciations.

Good But Hard To Follow

I liked the story, but it was hard to keep track of the different scenarios. A word like Meanwhile before the next scenario would have clued the reader in that there would be a change in the characters and scene.
