There are books of the same chemical composition as dynamite. The only difference is that a piece of dynamite explodes once, whereas a book explodes a thousand times. ― Yevgeny Zamyatin

It's an unusual play. Film noirish, if I can put it like that. As the story unravelled I got emotionally involved, and I waited with bated breath for the ending.
The story gave me the creeps.
Don't get confused with negative reviews. Either read the play first or, if you buy the audio, listen till the end. 'An inspector calls' is an emotional roller coaster which starts on a rather low key but gets mysterious and macabre by the end.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If my friend remembers and enjoyed old radio drama, this would be the show for him. When I was a kid in the 1950s, my father let me listen to records of old radio drama, and when I scanned the dial of the old tube radio late at night, sometimes I could find radio shows like this one.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

These were nice short stories fitting of the hard boiled detective I enjoy.

Which character – as performed by Jim French and Phil Harper – was your favorite?

Harry Nile, our hero is my favorite of course.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The whole flavor of dramatic radio theator is wonderful for me.

  • "series of 30 minute radio plays, wo..."

These are wonderfully voiced radio plays of some of the original Sherlock Holmes stories - they are old (from the 1950s), so the quality of the recording is not up to the stereo, multi-track standards of some, but the quality of the actors make up for any such issues. It's obvious that the stories are episodes of a radio series, since they each start and end with theme music and a voice over. I like the episodic nature of these stories - I can listen to one or two of them in between longer audiobooks to kind of take a mental break before moving from one book to another. The stories are good fun, and the narration is wonderful.

On New Year's Day, 1976, radio listeners were introduced for the first time to a former Chicago cop turned hard-luck private detective named Harry Nile, the brainchild of mystery fan Jim French, who created the 1940s-50s-era character for a one-time-only broadcast. But audiences wanted more, and so began 26 years of episodes. Here are 24 dramas covering Harry Niles' cases from May 1956 to Summer 1958. These are full-cast audio dramatizations.

Dragnet was perhaps the most famous and influential police procedural drama in media history. The series gave millions of audience members a feel for the boredom and drudgery, as well as the danger and heroism, of real-life police work.

Actor and producer Jack Webb's aims in Dragnet were for realism and unpretentious acting. He achieved both goals, and Dragnet remains a key influence on subsequent police dramas in many media.
