I have thoroughly enjoyed the complete series. Each book has it's own uniqueness and yet flows nicely together as a whole. This conclusion to the series ties everything up nicely. But as most books do, there is room for future books to be written.

I don't want to give anything away, but the narrator's performance at the end made me well up with tears. I've never had that happen to me before with an audiobook. And there are certain scenes that would have been confusing had the narrator not taken great care in making the quick point of view switches so smooth and clear.

All in all, kudos to the author for a great series and kudos to the narrator for bringing it all to life!

As battles rage across the solar system, Noah must work to join together a rag-tag bunch of miners, farmers, and scientists who would rather just live in peace. With only a time-traveling ship full of animals and a general from the history books, the Zarc family has to stand against the full might of the Poligarchy. Will the truth about what really happened 1,000 years in the past be enough to stop total war? Or will Noah and his friends need to find another way to bring down a dictator?

I bought this audiobook because my friend recommended it. She said she really enjoyed listening to it with her kids. It's something that even adults can enjoy. And she was right.

The main character, Noah, is very cool, sarcastic, typical teenager. But he also has a streak of bravery in him as well. The book is written in first person so you get to hear his thoughts and feelings about everything.

Time travel is a main part of the story and the author uses it very well. He created his own rules and sticks to them nicely.

The bad guy is bad - what did you expect? ;)

And the ending... well, for a "kids book"... it surprised even me!

It's fun how the author plays around with time travel and yet still stays within the "time travel rules" he created in the first book.

I love how there is a lot of international travel, too. Different countries and different people all with unique accents that the narrator does a great job of performing.

The way the story flows keeps you guessing who the real bad guy is right up to the very end. No early clues that leave a story flat. Plenty of back and forth and twists and turns to keep you on your toes.

Amanda's greatest hits:
  • The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom

    "Entertainment for the whole family"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
What did you love best about The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom?

Hero's Guild to Saving your Kingdom was a book that my children LOVED, and my husband tolerated well as we travelled. I even caught him smiling and chuckling more often than he would dare to admit. There was plenty of clean humour that keeps parents entertained.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters all had such great personalities.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Our favorite scene was when the princes were imprisoned by the trolls.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The princes are not always so charming.

    Any additional comments?

We have now nicknamed our children with the names of the princes. I think every family has a Gustav.

  • Magic Marks the Spot: The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates, Book 1

"Very Nearly the Best Book of the Year"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Magic Marks the Spot to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version. We enjoy audio books because we can enjoy them together as a family.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Magic Marks the Spot?

Hillary's first sword fight as a pirate. She used all of her pirate training as well as a few tricks picked up at finishing school.

What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I read to my children with voices, but I could never keep up with all of the passion of Kellgren. Every person was unique, but no one was so over the top that they were annoying. She had great energy that drove the story. I didn't want to stop the van and miss a minutes. I hope she narrates the rest of the series.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

When you are finished with finishing school, try piracy.

    Any additional comments?

We loved this book. It is one of the best listens we have ever had. I thought it was an old plot, 'Girl forgoes high society for adventure." However, this story was very original and had more than enough plot twists to keep even parents engaged.

  • The Candymakers

"Slow at first, but then we couldn't stop listening"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
If you could sum up The Candymakers in three words, what would they be?

    Sugar, Teamwork, and Intrigue

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Candymakers?

When we discovered someone was a spy.

    Any additional comments?

We loved that we got to hear the story from everyone's point of view.

  • The Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle

    "Worth the Wait"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
Would you listen to The Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle again? Why?

We will be listening to Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle. This series has been something everyone in our family of seven can agree on. Everyone laughs.

We have two boys and three girls in the back seats, and with this book everyone was appeased. It was never deemed "Boy-y or Girly."

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle?

When Briar Rose uses the Sword to win a battle of wills.

Which character – as performed by Bronson Pinchot – was your favorite?

Briar Rose. She is such a horrible person, yet Bronson makes her sound so unbelievable sarcastic you can't help but smile.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Storming a Castle?
    You and what army?

    Any additional comments?

We definitely appreciated more of feminine leads. My girls are excited to be brave like the Princess Ella, Snow White, and Lila. Yet rough and tumble boys are totally engaged as well.

Great reading draws you into the dangerous and charming world of the Borrowers. Crisis has launched father, mother, and daughter into an adventure that the daughter welcomes, the father determinedly copes with, and the mother endures reluctantly, longing for respectable safety but rising to every emergency. The story is beautifully crafted. It's a joy (and a chuckle) to see the world from the borrowers' perspective. Well-chosen details are vividly described, while suspense, surprise, and action drive the story. Throughout the book, it's refreshing to see a family of three strong and very different individuals who love and stand by each other.
