Three decades into this second career as writer, I'm still inspired by the people and places I've been able to experience all over the world. I continue to write full speed ahead, albeit with a deeper sense of the value of humor and not squandering the time we're given with the people we love. The diverse and fascinating world continues to intrigue me, showing up in my stories in characters and challenges. Writing fiction satisfies my sense of adventure in the everyday. The latest novel in progress follows a foster kid turned entrepreneur who dreams of building an empire like Jay Gatsby in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel. An ordinary guy struggling to make his way. Ukrainian second gen a year before the Russian invasion, he sells his trash collection business and is retrofitting a trailer park as the next step. Like his tenants, he's tested in all kinds of ways, ordinary and extraordinary, and discovers in their common humanity a secret worth knowing. Another ordinary person, like my earlier characters, the 14-year-old sister who can't save her brother from drowning, the mother of a vaccine-injured baby, an old cowboy who decides to make amends for running away from a pregnant wife forty years earlier, the 16-year-old boy who tells it like it is as he struggles to live a whole lifetime in a single year once he's diagnosed with leukemia. In 2022, my first children's book takes The Night Before Christmas in a new direction--there is a mouse stirring. Enhanced by whimsical illustrations by Elizabeth Harper, her first children's book also. For me, the miracle of writing is that mere words, honed with a fierce red editing pen, can create these characters out of blank pages, immerse them in my imagination, and make them my friends, and hopefully yours.
