Robert H. Mottram was born and raised on the East Coast and lives now in a home overlooking the Salish Sea on an island in Washington state. He worked for more than 40 years in daily journalism as a newspaperman and Associated Press Correspondent. Mottram is a recipient of more than 40 national and regional awards for reporting and writing, including two national "Best of the Best" awards for feature writing. The story placed first among saltwater fishing stories in the organization's newspaper-writing division. It was the second time in three years a saltwater fishing story by Mottram won first place in the national contest. Mottram was also awarded the OWAA's "Best of the Best" Award. The second award was voted by OWAA's past presidents as the best newspaper outdoor story on any subject in 1997.
