Laurie Hellmann has always been an advocate of people. From her first job out of college as a litigation paralegal for a large medical malpractice defense firm to navigating the confusing world of insurance coverage and treatments for her 20-year-old son with autism, her career path has always been connected to the health and well being of others. Laurie is passionate about leaving a lasting impact on the lives of everyone she touches and is especially focused on helping those who feel voiceless or often seem unspoken find a way to use their voice to make a difference in the world. When her son, Skyler, was diagnosed with autism in 2006, she transitioned what she thought would just be a career of advocating for others into a higher calling to lead. By becoming what she calls an “Autism Warrior,” Laurie seeks to empower others, through her book and speaking engagements, with knowledge about autism spectrum disorder and the adversities special needs individuals in our communities may face in hopes to eliminate stigmas and create a more accepting world. Through her recently published memoir, “Welcome to My Life: A Personal Parenting Journey Through Autism,” Laurie shares very honest and raw accounts of her family’s personal experience. Laurie also hosts a podcast, “Living the Sky Life,” where she empowers people from around the globe to share their meaningful and very personal experiences with autism & other disorders to provide listeners with a new perspective or understanding. The goal for both her book and podcast, is to unite families who have fiercely navigated through therapies, medications and countless other medical and personal challenges with their loved ones battling this puzzling disorder as well as open the eyes of others who may not personally experience autism in their lives. While autism presents various challenges, Laurie’s goal is to help her audiences realize that it does not define WHO a person is nor does it devalue or diminish their contributions to this world. In addition to being an author, audiobook narrator, podcaster, speaker and respected leader in the pharmaceutical industry, Laurie is a wife, sister, mother, community volunteer and holds a strong passion for all types of fitness -- marathon running, CrossFit, cycling and bodybuilding. Laurie was born and raised a Michigander but has lived in Southern Indiana for the last 20 years.
