Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Mix equal parts historic fiction, adventure, and romance. Add a dash of time travel. Blend with pitch-perfect narration. And you'll understand why Outlander is an all-time favorite among Audible listeners. Whether she's giving voice to the former World War II nurse Claire or the 18th Century Scottish warrior Jamie, Davina Porter brings a magical intimacy to this epic tale. ¿Steve Feldberg

Publisher's Summary

This stunning blend of historical romance and time traveling adventure has captured the hearts of millions of readers around the world and catapulted author Diana Gabaldon to the top of the New York Times best seller list. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love.

In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?

Great Scot! Don't miss the complete Outlander series:
Outlander
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross
A Breath of Snow and Ashes
An Echo in the Bone

Please note: Even though Recorded Books has produced unabridged editions of both The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes, they do not have what's called "digital rights" for those recordings. That means they can sell them in CD format, but they cannot yet distribute them via digital services such as Audible and iTunes. The last time we checked with Diana's agent, his belief was that it could take until sometime next year to resolve the situation. It's wrapped up in contracts and such that have to be untangled. Unfortunately, that's out of our hands. But we keep pushing. Stay tuned!

What the Critics Say

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (Audiofile)

This book is wonderfully romantic, well written and appeals to my interests in natural herbal medicines and the history surrounding the time of Bonnie Prince Charles. I loved it. I want a Jamie.

I have no idea why this novel is so highly rated. It's boring, the sex scenes seem to be mere filler, the sadist scenes are too much, and the heroine is unlikeable. Don't waste your time with this one.

I am a fan of Davina Porter from her readings of M.C. Beaton's book and now a big fan of Diana Gabaldon. I will admit that I have had the Outlander series books for quite a while; just could not get pass the first 50 pages of Outlander. Once I joined Audible.com, begun listening to Outlander, I became fanatical. I go back and forth with reading the book and listening to the book. The characters are breathtaking. The history of 17 century Scotland, the love between the main characters and the surrounding people who love/hate or who I love/hate, got me so captured, that now I need her books to breath, sing, scream, holler, infuriating, howling, and any other adjective I can find. You, book lovers of the world like me, have got to read at least the first one. Then tell me you are not addicted to Claire and Jamie, Just tell me!!!

I had read the books some years ago, and admire this author/story teller who is so detailed yet gives fast moving adventure and characters. However, if there is an improvement on perfection, it is in the reader here! Incredible accents and voices that truely make you SEE what you are hearing. I enjoyed every minute!

The naysayers may have wanted more action. Each love scene is written so discreetly written as to not embarrass all but the most prudish and none roughly written as MANY other 'thriller' love scenes. There is also action hand to hand fighting with dirks and swords. This book is LONG and held my attention to the very last word. No wonder people rave. If you want historical fiction with a very solid love story this is unbeatable. Every sentence in this story is so perfectly crafted and so perfectly narrated that they are breathtaking. The nuances in the narrator's voice are the best I've heard yet! She makes every sentence a joy to hear.
