Dank eines Stipendiums trat er 1808 in das Wiener Stadtkonvikt ein. Als Chorsänger in der Hofkapelle studierte er fünf Jahre bei Antonio Salieri und hatte Gelegenheit das Schülerorchester zu dirigieren. Ab 1814 war er dann Schulgehilfe seines Vaters. In diesem Jahr entstand auch das Lied 'Gretchen am Spinnrad'.
