Story
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Story
The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

A trio of great and timely stories
Some timely writing - I am impressed that something this good came out so quickly in the covid-timeline. These are stories that could be good listens at anytime but have added significance with the current events and everyone's situation. Touches on how things are changing and different angles on familiar themes.

The first was the best.
Before you read this, understand I’m a suspense fan, not a mystery fan. This was marketed as suspense stories, which i feel was a miss-market and had it been marketed to fit its genre, I would not have picked it. This is not the fault of the author. The writing was good and the performances adequate to outstanding. *spoilers ahead*
The first story was more comedy than mystery which was its saving grace. I actually skipped over the ending of the second story with 2 minutes to the end because the game of cat and mouse between brothers ended and understood that the protagonist would leave his brother for dead. And the third story I listened all the way to the end, but felt the story took a wrong turn when the heroine made the decision to break and enter her neighbor’s home and so the ending felt somewhat apropos when she she finds her neighbor dead and hacked to pieces.

Was wondering when we would hear from Ben Winters!
This was a great, almost in real time, few short stories! I really like the writing of Ben H. Winters and this was no exception. I actually wish there had been more short stories. If you're looking for some fantastic writing from someone who is telling stories like he is reading your mind during quarantine, then take a listen to this and smile the entire time because you can relate. Also, the performances were spot on. It really felt like I was listening to stories from friends and not books.
