Once again, you feel out of your league in this whole parenting thing. Or, perhaps a friend has confessed to your teen that he or she is trans. Your child is asking you how to respond. You are at a loss. Or, an uncle has begun estrogen treatments and is asking your family to use a new name for him.

Even though I’m not what you’d call a typical teenager, at sixteen, the last thing anyone wants or needs is for anything or anyone to cause them to stand out from the crowd. A bodyguard, which I do not want or need, would do just that. Fortunately, that’s not going to be a problem for me because the crowd is gone—vanished, disappeared into thin air, leaving only me and my bodyguard behind on a deserted campus.
