Mary Brave Bird grew up fatherless in a one-room cabin, without running water or electricity, on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Philip Burnham tells the life story of the remarkable Packs the Dog, a member of the Minneconjou Lakotas who was born in 1864 east of the Black Hills. His father, Yellow Knife, died when the boy was five, and the family eventually enrolled at Pine Ridge Agency with the Oglalas under an uncle's name, Three Stars. In 1879 Packs the Dog joined the first class of Indian students to be admitted to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School.

Zintkala Waste, a full-blood Lakota, was born in 1943 in a remote community on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Near his first birthday, he developed pneumonia. His mother, knowing he was near death, prayed to God, “Wakan Tanka, if you give me back my son, I will give him to you”. Therefore, Zintkala spent his growing-up years with elders, wisdom-keepers, and healers, who taught him traditional ways, including how to access and trust spirit guides. When he left the reservation and faced devastating hardship, loss, and discrimination, his Lakota values sustained him.

There are moments when the past and the present come together. Joseph knows who he was in 1890, but that man isn't the same man he is today, or is he? Joseph struggles with depression, trying to find his identity when the distant past makes a surprising return to his life. It's enlightening with a mixture of happiness and sorrow as Joseph tries to sort it all out.
