Teenagers Joe and Frank Hardy had ample mental ability to reach conclusions and act accordingly. Some of that ability was handed down by their former police detective Fenton Hardy, and the overall concept was enhanced by their perceptive cleverness. If you want to be tense with excitement, here’s a chance. They discover a counterfeiting operation in an old mill, are trapped and face a struggle to escape. Eventually, they overcome the misdeeds and wind up with some of the phony money.

Frank and Joe Hardy, brothers who are high school students, help a stranger at the train station to exchange a five-dollar bill—only to find out later that it was counterfeit. Bayport seems to be flooded with counterfeit money, and people are on guard. But many innocent people, including Mrs. Hardy, lose money in seemingly reasonable transactions. The Secret Service and Mr. Hardy know something is happening around Bayport, but they cannot discover who or where. The Hardy Boys use their investigation skills and courage in dangerous situations to discover the counterfeiting gang.

"The Secret of the Old Mill," the third book in the Hardy Boys series by Franklin W. Dixon, follows Frank and Joe Hardy as they investigate a mysterious counterfeiting operation in their hometown of Bayport. When they receive a strange, counterfeit bill at the local post office, the brothers suspect that something sinister is afoot. Their sleuthing leads them to an old, abandoned mill on the outskirts of town, where they uncover evidence of a secret criminal operation.

The Missing Chums is the fourth book in the original Hardy Boys series. Chet and Biff, friends of Frank and Joe Hardy, depart for a long-planned boating excursion, but mysteriously disappear in a storm. The Hardy Boys fear the worst when they can find nothing but a small amount of wreckage along the course Chet and Biff were to follow. Suddenly, Frank and Joe's mother receives a ransom note—for them!

While Frank and Joe Hardy, sons of the world famous private detective Fenton Hardy, are out sailing with their friends in a couple of boats, a sudden large storm separates the group. While one boat turns back, Chet and Biff continue sailing out to sea and go missing. After the storm, Frank and Joe fear the worst when they look for their friends and find some boat wreckage. But then they receive a ransom note…. for themselves! Baldy Turk and his gang have kidnapped the wrong pair of boys! Frank and Joe are able to trace the gang to Blacksnake Island, but will they be able to free their friends?

The Hardy boys looked at one another regretfully. The gang who stole the gold attempts to thwart their train ride from their home in Bayport on Barmet Bay on the Atlantic coast to Lucky Bottom, Montana. After finally arriving, the boys face more trouble with the gang as well as a mine shaft cave-in, a Rocky Mountain Blizzard, a pack of wolves, and finally Black Pepper, the leader of the gang. On top of all that, the boys needed to discover who was the first thief and who are the rightful owners of the gold.

While their father, Fenton Hardy, is in Montana working on a case of stolen gold, the Hardy Boys and their friends meet Jadbury Wilson, a former gold prospector. Wilson relates his tale of how Bart Dawson, a trusted member of his party, disappeared with four bags of hard-won gold during a gunfight. Frank and Joe are thrilled to receive a telegram from their father, requesting that they join him in Montana immediately to assist on the gold case. But to their surprise, Fenton Hardy is working for Bart Dawson, the same man whom Jadbury Wilson has accused of having stolen his gold.

Their famous detective Dad, Fenton, just happens to be investigating the same missing gold in Montana! He calls the boys to come and help him as he’s injured and bed-bound. They are followed, tricked, and delayed, but ultimately get to Montana where they are attacked by wolves in abandoned mines, and finally begin Hunting for Hidden Gold!

Bayport, the home of the Hardy Boys, is suddenly experiencing numerous car thefts. When their friend, Jack Dodd, and his father are accused of stealing a car that mysteriously shows up parked behind their barn, Frank and Joe vow to clear Dodd's good name and track down the car theft ring. The challenge is that the police, state troopers, and even Frank and Joe's detective father, Fenton Hardy, have had no luck in figuring out how the cars disappear along the Shore Road without trace.
