Caleb never wanted to join the army. And he certainly didn't want to be turned into a dragon. But when he doesn't understand how his new body works and can barely make a move without being watched by the wizard who took his humanity, how is he supposed to escape before he can be turned into a weapon of war?

Ziya should have been the one to escape. If she and the white dragon Kaal had tried to escape on any night but a snowy night, her black scales would have been better camouflage than his white ones. Instead, she was captured, and he went free. And her captors remind her of this every day. So when she gets the chance for revenge, she's ready to make him pay.

Kaal and Ziya have one chance to find Alan and make him pay for all he did to them. Their dragon allies have agreed to let them try to confront Alan on their own, even though two adolescent, unnatural dragons who have never hunted down anything more than their dinner aren’t much of a match for someone as powerful as Alan. But a human lord whose village specializes in fighting dragons might be just the ally they need.

The dragon council has scorched most of the land in their quest to kill off the last of humanity. Now, even other dragons agree that they must be stopped. Unfortunately, the best way to stop them is to team up with the humans in Ytona, a village dedicated entirely to killing dragons and to making use of their magic. Caleb has been to the village before; the last time he went, he was imprisoned for being a dragon. But when he’s gravely injured in a fight with the council, he has no choice but to entrust his safety to the village while he recovers. Nowhere else is safe.

Kaal and Ziya only taste peace for a matter of months before it gets disrupted again. Practically as soon as they're ready to take up their new responsibilities with the dragon council, they're met with a new problem. Sea monsters from the north are invading the waters to the south, spelling trouble for everyone. Ziya is sent north to help solve the problem, while Kaal remains behind to play liaison between the humans and dragons of different clans.
