"The Oblong Box" is a horror short story by Edgar Allan Poe that first appeared in the May 1844 edition of Godey's Lady's Book about a sea voyage and a mysterious box. Edgar Allan Poe, born in Boston, was an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Patrick Girard Lawlor, a classically trained stage actor, has performed onstage throughout the US and Europe.

The Oblong Box which was first published in 1844 concerns a sea voyage and a mysterious boxtaken aboard the ship. "It was about six feet in length by two and a half in breadth." The owner of the box begins acting very strangly and refuses to say what is in the box. As the ship passes Cape Hatteras, it is caught in a hurricane and the terrible truth aboutthe box is finally revealed. A vintage Poe story.

In this tragic tale of a summer sea voyage, the narrator’s old friend, Cornelius Wyatt, is onboard the Independence, sailing from South Carolina to New York City, with his wife and two sisters and an oblong pine box. A hurricane near Cape Hatteras leads to tragedy, and the truth is revealed about Wyatt’s family.

On a voyage, a woman meets her long term "friend" along with his wife to discover they have a mysterious oblong box in their possession. Is it merely a painting as they've told her or something much more ominous?

Edgar Allan Poe uses three elements, which make the mystifying atmosphere in the "Oblong Box". He uses nature, mystery, and a deep romantic love.

The narrator begins by booking passage on a ship to travel from Charleston, SC to New York. He soon finds that an artist friend, Mr. Cornelius Wyatt, along with Wyatt's wife and two sisters, will be on the same ship. Our narrator reports that there are three rooms booked for this party, and he wonders what the explanation can be. Of course, it must be a servant! But he sees that the word servant had been on the passenger list, but had been crossed out. We also learn at this point that the narrator knows Mr. Wyatt's sisters, but has never met the wife.

"Message Found in a Bottle": The sole survivor of a sudden storm is trapped on a phantom freighter, doomed to an unknown destiny. "The Oblong Box": An ordinary voyage is cursed by its strange and mysterious cargo.
