Former lawman turned rancher Britt MacMasters and his son Chad begin a new life in Clearmont, Wyoming until Britt’s past returns to haunt them. One of the toughest outlaw gangs in the west is headed to Clearmont for revenge. The Great Sioux War of 1876-77 began at daybreak on March 17, 1876, when Colonel Joseph J. Reynolds and six cavalry companies struck a village of Northern Cheyennes - Sioux allies - thereby propelling the Northern Plains tribes into war. The ensuing last stand of the Sioux against Anglo-American settlement of their homeland spanned some 18 months, playing out across more than 20 battle and skirmish sites and costing hundreds of lives on both sides and many millions of dollars. And it all began at Powder River.

In Season 12, Vol. 2, big changes come to Clearmont as Millie sells her beloved hotel to none other than Octavia Hudson, while Esther shocks the ladies and upsets the men as she becomes the new owner of the saloon, and quickly finds trouble when she hires a famous French singer to give a concert on the Golden Nugget stage. Meanwhile, Britt must try to keep Andrew Hudson from the gallows in Boston, while Dawes is faced with the loss of Cheyenne, who decides to leave Clearmont.

Powder River rolls into its 11th season with an epic two-part adventure called "The Man from Isandlwana", in which a British officer arrives in Clearmont haunted by a terrifying past. In Season Two of Powder River, Britt MacMasters has once again put on the badge of United States Marshal and returns to Clearmont, Wyoming after several months away on the trail with his son Chad. There he finds a new Sheriff in town - who doesn't like the idea of a U.S. Marshal living in his jurisdiction but soon calls on the famed Marshal for help when the Sioux attack a stagecoach. A season highlight is a three part episode where General George Custer recruits Chad to scout for him as he heads toward the Little Big Horn, causing Britt to follow in pursuit.

In the explosive ninth season of Powder River, Britt and Cheyenne cross the Rio Grande in pursuit of Clegg's Gang, who have taken Levi, Andy, and Laurel prisoner, leading up to a fiery shootout on the streets of Camargo. In Clearmont, Erica is threatened by an outlaw for printing a story about his intimidation of ranchers. He wants a retraction, and threatens to burn the Bugle to the ground if she fails to do so.

Five years have gone by since the devastation of the buffalo stampede hit Clearmont, and the three-part season opener titled "The Twisted Badge" puts Marshal Britt MacMasters in the most dangerous place he has ever been – the other side of the Law.

In Season 12, Vol. 1, Millie and Doc meet their newest challenge head on, but Millie decides it may be time to sell her beloved General Store, restaurant and hotel. Britt heads out of town on the trail of a dangerous outlaw and is soon joined by an unlikely helper, who promises more trouble than help. Meanwhile, Jacob returns to Clearmont having graduated college, but draws the ire of Cheyenne who is about to marry Laurel, but senses his fiancé may have eyes for the new lawyer instead. A death on a train sends Doc, Dawes, and Britt on the trail of a killer.

In Season Six of Powder River, Etta and Jacob discover a 10-year-old boy, Levi Curtis, chopping wood at their home, acting as if he lived there. Britt soon discovers he is the sole survivor of an Indian attack on the Conestoga wagon he's traveling in with his family. Britt realizes Levi has no relatives and prepares to take him to the orphanage in Sheridan. When the telephone line arrives in Clearmont, Millie hires Etta to work the switchboard. Etta soon begins hearing things she shouldn’t: other people’s conversations.

Power River concludes its 11th season as the evidence in a murder is stacked against Mrs. Hudson. Marshal MacMasters, Doc, and Sheriff Dawes enter "The Valley of No Return" in search of a missing wagon train, and while Cheynne and Laurel make life plans, a life-changing event falls upon Doc and Millie.
