Resumen del Editor

With the end of the Civil War, the nation recommenced its expansion onto traditional Indian tribal lands, setting off a wide-ranging conflict that would last more than three decades. In an exploration of the wars and negotiations that destroyed tribal ways of life even as they made possible the emergence of the modern United States, Peter Cozzens gives us both sides in comprehensive and singularly intimate detail. He illuminates the encroachment experienced by the tribes and the tribal conflicts over whether to fight or make peace and explores the squalid lives of soldiers posted to the frontier and the ethical quandaries faced by generals who often sympathized with their native enemies. As the action moves from Kansas and Nebraska to the Southwestern desert to the Dakotas and the Pacific Northwest, we encounter a pageant of fascinating characters including Custer, Sherman, Grant, and a host of other military and political figures as well as great native leaders such as Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Geronimo, and Red Cloud. For the first time, The Earth Is Weeping brings them all together in the fullest account to date of how the West was won.

Wonderful book

I was really moved by the audio book. The story and its telling were wonderfully done. The constant misunderstandings and lack of truthfulness at times led to such a tragic story. The book really gives you a feel for the events and how they transpired.

life and death of the first nation

this book follows the story of the American Indian people from the start to the sad finish. I have read this story several times over the past and how the American government lied and abused these people. They rob them of their land and their lives. I enjoyed the book but the story is very sad and heartbreaking. I recommend this book as a way of learning about a once proud people.

A good History of the Indian Wars

Here, Cozzens offers us a history of the various Indian Wars that were responsible for the conquering of the west and the relegation of many Native tribes either to extinction or to reservations.

Balanced Approach

Cozzens has done an admirable job of balancing the narrative of a controversial page American history. I still consider Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee required reading, but this book surely helps to put faces on the participants. I wish the Navajo Long Walk had been included, but I would still without hesitation recommend this book.

Informative, brutal and exciting

Absolutely fantastic audiobook, flew by. I not only learned a heck of lot about a subject I was deficient in but I was excited the entire time. Cross between a history book and an ultra violent war/action movie. Could not recommend it more.

Good Book!

Very relevant and interesting read, especially considering today's events at Standing Rock. This is a history involving atrocities on both sides that everyone should know and learn from.

Entertaining and informational

I enjoyed listening and had no problem with the narrator or keeping up with his time machine jumps.. which are many.
