HG Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific writer who mastered many sub-genres of the horror, science fiction, and monster tale. 'The Plattner Story' is the strange tale of Gottfried Plattner, a modern languages teacher at a private school in England who, while conducting a chemistry experiment, accidently causes an explosion. The results of the explosion are mysterious. First, Plattner disappears completely.

The narrator discusses the case of Gottfried Plattner, a schoolteacher who disappeared after an explosion when he experimented in chemistry class. He re-appeared nine days later, and found that his asymmetrical facial features had become the reverse of what is seen in an old photograph.
