Sir Richard Francis Burton and Algernon Charles Swinburne are sucked into the perilous depths of a moral and ethical vacuum when Lord Palmerston commissions Burton to investigate assaults on young women committed by a weird apparition known as Spring Heeled Jack - and to find out why werewolves are terrorizing London's East End.

Belching fire and jumping rooftop to rooftop, Spring-heeled Jack returned to terrorize Londoners. Doctor Pendergrass had settled into London and his surgeon’s job at Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital. He loved the city, but he detested its criminal element. At night, in the dark alleys and lanes, Pendergrass did what constables at Scotland Yard could not. His dark excursions were ripe with hypocrisy, not to mention the risk of going to prison or the gallows if he were caught.

He comes from the fog. He leaps from the rooftops. He leaves behind only fire and fear. London, 1838. Panic grips the city as a clawed figure in a cloak terrorizes young women in the gaslit streets. Witnesses swear he leaps impossible heights, breathes fire, and vanishes into the mist. The newspapers give him a name: Spring Heeled Jack. Nearly two centuries later, the sightings return. Algernon Charles Swinburne is an unsuccessful poet and follower of de Sade, for whom pain is pleasure and brandy is ruin. The two men are sucked into the perilous depths of this moral and ethical vacuum, when Lord Palmerston commissions Burton to investigate assaults on young women.
