Seven hundred years old. Still the most ambitious journey in literature. In 1308, a Florentine poet in exile began writing about a man who walked through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven in the course of three days. He was writing about himself. He was writing about Florence, about the papacy, about the men who had wronged him, about the woman he had loved at nine years old and never forgotten. He was also writing about the structure of existence, the nature of justice, and what it means to have lived. The Divine Comedy is all of these things simultaneously — and it has never stopped being ...

Story2
Aristotle's Poetics is the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory and the first extant philosophical treatise to focus on literary theory. In it, Aristotle offers an account of what he calls "poetry" (a term which in Greek literally means "making" and in this context includes drama—comedy, tragedy, and the satyr play—as well as lyric poetry, epic poetry, and the dithyramb). He examines its "first principles" and identifies its genres and basic elements. His analysis of tragedy constitutes the core of the discussion.

Story10
Writing successful screenplays that capture the public imagination requires more than simply following the formulas prescribed by the dozens of screenwriting manuals currently in print. Learning the "how-tos" is important, but understanding the dramatic elements that make up a good screenplay is equally crucial. In A Poetics for Screenwriters, veteran writer and teacher Lance Lee offers aspiring and professional screenwriters a thorough overview of all the dramatic elements of screenplays, unbiased toward any particular screenwriting method.

Story5
The Book of John, with its appeal to emotion and spirit, has long been a favorite of Christians everywhere. Yet for many, connecting to the text can be difficult, as both non-believers and believers alike wade through awkward conjunctives, repetition, stilted language, and unclear translations that result in bafflement. No translation in print has been able to render John's beautiful poetry into English, while retaining exacting literal accuracy, until now.

Story2
In his Poetics, Aristotle puts forward that everything we create is a kind of imitation of life, merely using different types of media, objects and manners, whether painting, music, or language. We shape the images, sounds or words to make some particular point and tell a unique story. But if you want an audience to respond to what you have to say, whatever you create must be connected logically to the real world. The rules of doing this successfully are laid out in Poetics.

Story1
Aristotle's Poetics (335 BCE) is the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory and first surviving philosophical treatise on dramatic or literary theory. The work begins with a preliminary discourse on tragedy, epic poetry, and comedy as the chief forms of imitative poetry. By "imitative", Aristotle means the imitation of action in words as a creative process. He distinguishes comedy, tragedy, the satyr play, lyric poetry, and epic poetry by their differences in musical rhythm, harmony, meter, melody, nature of the characters, and the manner in which the narrative is presented.
