Quanti modi ci sono di odiare? Con quanti nomi si chiama l’odio, quanto ci serve, quanto se ne vede e quanto se ne subisce? È ormai chiaro che il sentimento che più di tutti si affaccia nel nostro tempo è proprio questo, l’odio: negli sfoghi sui social, nei muri che si alzano o si vogliono alzare, nel rifiuto dello straniero, nella furia delle tifoserie, nelle difficoltà relazionali che degenerano e in innumerevoli altre forme, più sottili o più evidenti.

Il testo utilizzato per il seguente progetto è la prima edizione del 1877. Include 16 poesie ed una nota dello stesso Giosuè Carducci. La prima edizione ha certamente un valore "storico" e chi vorrà verificare le piccole variazioni apportate dal Carducci stesso in edizioni successive potrà apprezzare il lavoro di "affinamento" effettuato dall'autore. Saranno invece pubblicate solo in anni successivi altre poesie aggiuntive a questa serie iniziale di 16, coi titoli: "Nuove odi barbare", Bologna, Zanichelli, 1882 e "Terze odi barbare", Bologna, Zanichelli, 1889.
