An exemplary knight and veteran of a horrific battle against the undead armies of the Lich Lord, Deacon Shader must compete for his Order's highest office and attempt to become the Keeper of the Sword of the Archon. Sick and close to death, he is drawn on by visions of a black staff within a forest of tar.

Awakened from an induced year-long slumber, the nameless dwarf is tortured by memories of slaughter and must come to terms with who he has become: an outcast, a butcher, the most reviled of dwarven-kind.

When Shadrak the Unseen steals a magical ring from one wizard on behalf of another, his life quickly goes from bad to worse. Before he can deliver the ring, an invisible thief snatches it from him, and flees to the city of Jeridium. Soon, everyone and his dog has designs on the ring, but its promise of power leads only to disillusionment and death, and the ring is revealed for what it really is: A snare for the unsuspecting. A lure that leads to the undead clutches of the Witch Queen of Tho-Agoth.

Shadrak the Unseen should have known better. Stealing from one wizard on behalf of another was the sort of job he'd sworn never to take. But times were tough and grief had left its mark. The thing that should have really warned him off, though, was that the artifact he'd been commissioned to retrieve was a ring crafted by none other than the Witch Queen of Thogani, the Desecrated City.
