The fictional town of Mudfog was based on Chatham in Kent, where Dickens spent part of his youth. When "Oliver Twist" first appeared in Bentley's Miscellany in February 1837, Mudfog was described by Dickens as the town where Oliver was born and spent his early years, making "Oliver Twist" a continuation of "The Mudfog Papers". This allusion was removed when the novel was published as a book, under the title "The Mudfog Papers and Other Sketches" (1837).

Christian Science is a collection of essays Twain wrote about Christian science, beginning with an article that was published in Cosmopolitan in 1899. Although Twain was interested in mental healing and the ideas behind Christian Science, he was hostile towards its founder, Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910). A humorous work of fiction, it describes how he fell over a cliff while walking in Austria, breaking several bones. A Christian Science practitioner who lived nearby was sent for, but could not attend immediately and so undertook to provide an "absent healing."

"The Battle of Life: A Love Story" is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in 1846. It is the fourth of his five "Christmas Books". The setting is an English village that stands on the site of an historic battle. Some characters refer to the battle as a metaphor for the struggles of life, hence the title. "The Battle of Life" is the only one of the five Christmas Books that has no supernatural or explicitly religious elements. (One scene takes place at Christmas time, but it is not the final scene.)
