  • Don’t Fight the ATS, Befriend it! Part 1 of 2
    May 7 2024

Welcome fellow detectives, do you know what a ghost job is? What about how you can get companies to send you their job postings directly to your inbox? And then there’s the dreaded ATS that scary monster hiding behind every job you apply to online. ATS or Applicant Tracking Systems may seem scary, and we are often told to conquer them or else our application will be sent to the abyss.

Well, perhaps that is just not true. What about instead of beating the ATS you feed it? Join us as we welcome William Steward the Director of Canadian Operations at Equitek Employment Equity Solutions with special thanks to Brenda Davidson from the Edmonton MFRC who made this awesome connection for us.

William provided us with so much great information I broke it into two podcast episodes. Not to stop there, we have a robust video that complements our conversations and also adds some excellent information on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Make sure to check out the show notes for more information.

So for now, listen in part one as we explore the Applicant Tracking System and the “RULE” for E-Resume creation. Then plan to join us for part two as Will takes us step by step in the creation of a custom e-resume that not only befriends the ATS but feeds it too!

So if you are ready to make a dramatic impact on your ability to be noticed by employers hiring for positions that you want, let’s get started, because as always… the clues await!

  • Are We Ageist?
    Apr 23 2024

Welcome fellow detectives. First off, I have a special thanks to my counterpart at the Edmonton MFRC, Brenda. She spearheaded this episode. Brenda, you are a rock star, but I think you already know that.

As you know I often say that I’m not 24 anymore, making offhanded statements like that, but am I being ageist? Against myself? As Brenda and I discussed this, we spoke about reverse ageism and our thoughts on how ages and stages affect employability and job search. The more we chatted the more questions we had, and I knew exactly who to call.

Join us as we welcome Lisa Taylor – President of Challenge Factory. Lisa gives us deeper insight into the terms we use, giving us some excellent suggestions and insight about ageism and what’s happening when we think about age.

So, if you're ready, let’s get started because as always, the clues await!

  • LinkedIn Content Double Header with Daniel Kading Part 1 ….
    Feb 13 2024

Welcome Fellow Detectives, LinkedIn is huge, and while I feel it is a definite must-have for networking, I also find it a bit overwhelming.

In preparing for a LinkedIn info session last year, I stumbled onto Daniel Kading’s profile. A LinkedIn top voice and content writer extraordinaire, I was excited to have him not only respond to me online answering some questions I had but when he agreed to join me for this podcast I was beyond thrilled.

Daniel came through with so much great content and I would be remiss to squeeze it all into one episode. So welcome fellow detectives to our very first doubleheader.  Yes, you heard me right, I split this gold up into two awesome episodes. Thanks so much, Daniel for your time and passion and for giving us a lot of great information and insight.

A freelance ghostwriter and social media manager, now content creator and agency owner, Daniel helps people ghostwrite, build their personal brand, tell their story, and leverage LinkedIn to create some awesome business results.

Daniel is a community builder, and in this episode, he shares how his decade-plus at the skate park helped make him who he is today. He describes the level of commitment needed - how it takes months and sometimes years to learn the basics. He views content creation somewhat the same. Always open to answering questions and letting people pick his brain, Daniel explains how consistency, asking questions, getting feedback, implementing changes, and pivoting can help you thrive online.

Join us as Daniel shares his favourite parts of LinkedIn, how to find, reach out, and network with industry leaders. The importance of sharing your personal story and depth online. The importance of having your own personal brand and building content as well as his thoughts on direct messaging and how to connect and engage with people you want to work with including recruiters and maybe a bit about LinkedIn analytics too.

So if you are ready, let’s get started because as always - the clues await!

As Your Employment Detective, it is important to me that I share with you some of the work I do with my peers in the Career Development field. While many of my peers in Career Development may have the chance to meet /work with you as a Military or Veteran Spouse, some may not clearly understand the factors you deal with.
