  • Connecting to Cope: A Woman’s Journey of Healing Behind Bars and Passion for Justice Reform with Ranae Van Roekel (Episode #141)
    Dec 11 2025
Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Ranae Van Roekel, founder of Connecting to Cope, trauma informed coach, justice reform advocate, and caregiver coach, to talk about her journey of healing from being a felon behind bars that led to her passion for justice reform. She shares her story with the hope of helping others heal from their trauma, utilize self-care and coping strategies, and avoid the consequences and impact of unresolved trauma. Turning herself in is just the start of her recovery. Ranae shares how to find safety in healing behind bars through peer advocates, and the different programs and therapies like CBT and EMDR that helped her discover who she was and how to be herself. By building the program Connecting to Cope (named after her dog!), Ranae now advocates for reforms in the justice system that prioritizes restoration, not destruction, and lowering the rate of recidivism. She helps people cope with post-incarceration syndrome, and emphasizes the need for programs in schools with high-risk demographics. Ranae is here to make you realize that, “You are not the worst thing you ever did and not the best thing you ever did. You are a culmination of everything you’ve done in your life.” Dr. Lynn Hellerstein, Developmental Optometrist, co-owner of Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, P.C., award-winning author and international speaker, holds powerful and inspiring conversations with her guests in the areas of health, wellness, education, sports and psychology. • Take One-Degree Shifts and Free Yourself from the Invisible Cage of Abuse with Dr. Lisa Cooney (Episode #140)
    Dec 4 2025
Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Dr. Lisa Cooney, seasoned psychotherapist, trauma recovery expert, and founder of One Degree Shift Academy, to talk about the human side of therapists and how their own underlying issues can affect their approach to their clients. Lisa found her calling in helping others heal from their traumas through her superpower of bringing the yin and yang to her work: the psychological and physical - but it wasn’t a simple path. Having experienced trauma and abuse at a young age, she was aware of “the invisible cage of abuse” that persists in victims, and the subtle effects of counter-transference where therapists’ own traumas can affect their work. She recognizes the need for integrity and accountability for professionals like her to set boundaries and even decline a client when they are dealing with similar issues. In fact, she even did her own work of seeking help in dealing with her own issues early in her career. Ultimately, Lisa’s goal is to contribute to clients’ willingness to actually change, not just engage. By confronting people’s toxicity, she opened the path for communication and healing. Lisa inspires you to trust yourself and make changes, even just one-degree shifts. Take the next right action every day and you’ll realize that these small steps can end up into huge results. Nov 27 2025
Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Hannah Walton, vision therapist and intuitive wellness guide, to talk about holistic wellness—exploring the power of slowing down, nourishing the nervous system and reconnecting with our intuitive wisdom as a compass for living with more balance, authenticity, and alignment. She starts with breathwork. Breath is medicine, and it is our anchor to grounding and bridge to our intuition. She teaches us that intuition is not woo-woo - it’s wisdom - so follow it even if it defies logic. Discover our three brains: the head brain, heart brain and gut brain, each with its own intelligence. Find out about heart-brain coherence and how to become heart-led humans. As a vision therapist, Hannah helps build resilience, confidence and trust with our sensory system by integrating holistic wisdom and collaborating with other fields towards total wellness. • Movement is Life: Listen to Your Body and Express Yourself with Dance Movement Therapy with Erica Hornthal (Episode #138)
    Nov 13 2025
Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Erica Hornthal, known as “The Therapist That Moves You,” board-certified dance/movement therapist, award-winning author and founder of Chicago Dance Therapy, to talk about dance movement therapy and how it provides structure and space for people to truly listen to their bodies. Movement is life and our movements influence our thoughts, which influence our behavior, which makes us who we are. Somatic therapy teaches us that the body keeps score and remembers specific incidents in our lives that could create perceived threats where there are none. Learn how to widen the window of tolerance towards adjustment, discover the difference between movement that perpetuates trauma versus dispelling and releasing built up energy that improve your well-being. Erica emphasizes the importance of finding stability and safety in your environment while building a diverse movement vocabulary. There is expression and communication beyond words, and dance as a therapeutic modality and artform is one of the keys to unlocking what’s inside you. Remember that we were born movers, not thinkers, so if you want to think differently, you have to move differently. • Live Until You Die and See the World Even Without the Sight You Used to Have with Dr. Robert Sanet (Episode #137)
    Nov 6 2025
Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight has an extra special show this week as she speaks with Dr. Robert Sanet, owner and director of the San Diego Center for Vision Care, adjunct associate professor at several colleges of optometry, past president of COVD, and international consultant to hospitals and teaching centers in Spain, Italy and China, to talk about his inspiring life as a lecturer on behavioral optometry, and ultimately, love and humanity. Bob has the rare gift of helping people to feel seen, heard, safe and loved by exposing his struggles and vulnerabilities, starting with his own learning issues growing up that led him to his successful career as a behavioral optometrist, focusing mostly on kids with learning and behavioral problems (like nine-year old Grace who successfully learned to feed herself). Deciding that he “wants to touch a million lives before he dies,” he shifted into becoming a full-time lecturer. By seeing his students as collaborators and people he can equally learn from, he touched the hearts of many doctors and gave them space to speak up about their own flaws, ultimately changing their practice from being diagnosis-focused to patient-focused. Even now when he was already diagnosed of macular degeneration that already left him legally blind and Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer that is incurable, Bob still chooses every day to “live until he dies” and see the world even without the sight and strength he used to have. He wishes that this show will remind you to find your passion and love what you do, whether it’s being a behavioral optometrist or trimming trees (like his happy godson). Get out of your small life that is all about yourself, treasure your pillars of support (like his loving wife Linda), and change other people’s lives for the better. Remember: “The true gift of giving is planting trees under whose shade you’ll never sit.” Dr. Lynn Hellerstein, Developmental Optometrist, co-owner of Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, P.C., award-winning author and international speaker, holds powerful and inspiring conversations with her guests in the areas of health, wellness, education, sports and psychology. • Going Over the Mountain: How Outdoor Adventure (Often Alone) Makes Women Stronger with Christine Woodside (Episode #135)
    Oct 9 2025
Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Christine Woodside, writer, historian, editor, professor, and author of the book Going Over the Mountain: One Woman’s Journey from Follower to Solo Hiker and Back. For 20 years Chris has been the editor-in-chief of Appalachia, the country’s longest running mountaineering journal. Chris talks about her wilderness memoir Going Over the Mountain, how outdoor adventure - often alone - makes women stronger, and the ways her outdoor life has made her regular life richer and better. When Chris started hiking with her family as a child, she never stopped. Eventually, she conquered the Appalachian Trail with her husband, hiking an average of 15 miles a day. More than the distance, it’s the lessons that stuck with her during those hot, grueling days and nights she spent crying. “Put aside your emotions and just walk.” After four and a half months, she completed the trail and was never the same as she faced the regular world. She passed on the lessons of resilience in the mountains to her daughters, until later in life she decided to go on hiking alone, discovering new revelations about herself, the gift of time and living fully in a way that works for you and your stage in life. All the inspiration and wisdom she acquired fueled her other passion of writing, which she now shares to other aspiring writers in an annual writing workshop adventure.
